Just wondered, what would be considered a decent weight (F&R) for a pair of wheels capable of XC and a little AM action?
Thx

  • Sub 1900g is OK,sub 1800g pretty good, but kinda depnds on your am v xc needs.
XC rims can be sub 1600g.

    Thanks Spidey.

More XC really, but occaisional trail centres, so I wanted them to be capable....

Trail centres are hardly demanding. I'd ride my 1380g Rovals around trail centres without batting an eyelid.

I'd say 1500g wheels would be absolutely fine unless you're really heavy/clumsy. More depends on what tyres you're going to run. Obviously heavier wheels are going to be stiffer/tougher (within reason), but I wouldn't worry about going lighter.

Depends massively on the rims in question... My Traversees are about 1580g without skewers but with their own tape, but they're still strong. Not DH strong but still plenty tough for most people (I did manage to break a spoke on the fort william world cup downhill course, but only by applying some formiddable incompetence ;) ) But, there are plenty of heavier wheels which are less strong.

    Thanks chaps.

It's just not something I've llooked into in any great detail, so I thought I'd get interested and seek opinions.

  • Weight, Strength, price. Choose 2.

    Its a fine balance IMO...

Not sure how much they weigh but I've got pretty lightweight DT 4.2 rims on Hope 2 hubs on my Meta 5 and haven't bent them yet despite some moderately hard red/black trail centre use and rocky trails.

  • depends on the build a lot as well!

I need to weigh my DT XR4.2D on hope hubs with sapim cx-ray spokes and nipples.

Another one for Hope Pro II. I have a pair with Mavic XC717 rims and DT Competition double butted spokes. They are definately in the price/strength category since they are not exactly light.

If you're looking for a wheelset like that I'd get some Hope Hoops on Stan's 355 or Flow rims.

You spent more on your spokes than your rims and almost as much as your hubs? Interesting choice...
  • Hi

Realise this is an old thread.

A 32h rear Hope Hub on DT Swiss EX400 (same as old 4.1) weighs 890g with Hope rim tape which would easily give a sub 1500 wheelset.

This is what I use for trail riding, XC races and enduro.

What spokes though? And I doubt the front would weigh 610g!

    Hope Pro2 front = 185g
    Rim = 400g
Spokes and nipples (on average - let us say Dt Comp) = 200g

Wheel = 785g, and the set nearly 1700g.

That tallies in well with the Pro2 rear at 285g.

Given my ZTR 355s on Hope Pro IIs, with DT Comp spokes weight in at 1685g a pair you'll be lucky. My rims come in about 130g-140g lighter than the EX400 pair as well.
