Just back from a ride and I noticed a large bulge in the rear tyre: on removing it the carcass has several splits leading to weakness/delamination and a 'Schwalbe' effect ( http://www.bikeradar.com/news/article/s ... yres-21793)

Specialized Mondo with around 1500km's on it. Is this just age or is it likely to be defective?

I'd call it defective, unless there's a nearby cut that could be the problem.
Age and wear alone shouldn't cause a bulge, or at least not until after you've worn all of the tread off and started to wear the fabric away.

Send Specialized a couple of pictures of the tyre along with the relevant information and see what they have to say.
