Hi
I've been on a cheap hybrid for a couple of years and have now got the urge to go road biking mainly for fitness.
Wrong side of 50 now. I'm reasonably fit but no athlete.
I've spent a fair bit of time on the net doing some research and it looks like the Specialized Secture is a good choice for me. It's mean't to be more comfortable and has 3 chain rings. Where I live is a bit hilly. I have also looked at the Trek 1.2 my budget is around £600. I know this isn't going to get me the best but thas all I have.
I've been to see a local dealer J.E. James and wondered if anyone has experince of them. from doing my research on the net it seems very important to get the bike correctly set up.
Anyway any advice greatly appreciated.

The Secteur looks a really nice bike, but I was told they don't take mudguards which you may want in this sort of weather. If I was going to buy a Secteur I would go for the Sport model with carbon forks at £650 rather than the base model.0

is there a price cut on the secateurs0

I'm a beginner and have had the Secteur Elite for nearly 3 months now.
Have found it to be just what I wanted, don't tend to use the triple gearing now as I did when I first started. Tend to use the top two as my fitness and cycling muscles have improved.
Tend to attack the hills without going into the grannie gear as it is sometimes known but I'm sure I will still find a climb somewhere that will call for the use of the easier gearing.
Have done many enjoyable miles to date and love the bike, only problem I have had is numb nuts which since changing the seat to the avatar gel from the rival one the bike came with has sorted this.
A good bike in my opinion for what it's worth. Good luck!0 -

I`m also looking at getting Secteur elite. The Specialised UK web site says it comes with an avatar gel saddle but I noticed the Specialised Concept Store in Brum when i had a test run had a rival saddle fitted. Is this the stores way of making some extra cash????????0 -
Thanks "Road Novice"
did you consider or try any others I've heard good things about the Trek 1.2 and the Giant Defy 3.0 -
I have a Secteur Sport and I ike it.
I don't like the Sora shifters much but there is nothing wrong with them they work well enough.
It's a comfy bike but I've not done enough miles on it. Bloody weather right now isn't helping.
Not sure about mud guards, there doesn't look to be a lot of clearance. Maybe the Crud Road Racers will fit.0 -
I saw a good deal on ebay and bought it. Its a Giant SCR 2.0 with only a 100 miles. looks brand new. Got it for £400. with specialized computer and clipless pedals as well as the originals.
I think new it retailed for about £800. Going to pick it up today. Will post update on first ride
Thanks for all the advice on the Sectuer.

Think you have hit the nail on the head there. All the stores I have checked have the rival seat fitted and the Specialized site does state that the bike has an avatar gel saddle. Got a good deal with the bike so just bought the seat anyway.0 -

I did look at others but looking through the reviews this is the one that stood out for me. Was interested in a Trek. Very pleased with it though apart from the seat problem.
Didn't know how much to spend due to taking up cycling as a replacement for running and whether I would enjoy it, luckily I do enjoy it very much, more fun than running.0
