So I ordered a pair of Specialized Helix adaptalite glasses, and was impressed with the overall quality, but the fact all 3 frames were bent (I ordered another 2 to see if I had got a baddun) did put me off.specialized-team-helix-adaptalite-40274.jpg

These are cheap to my eye, works out at £47.50 per pair, but as I am sending 2 pairs back clearly, I do have the option to send all 3 back and perhaps look to the Rudy Rydon II's (I have a smaller face) with photochromic lenses........

This place http://www.directsunglasses.co.uk/rudy-project-rydon-ii-carbon-impactx-photo-red.html appears to be the cheapest, but they are still double the price.
Is it worth it?

And if I was to go Photochromic, what lens would you reckon to go for, ie the Photo Red, Photo Clear, or Photo Grey........?

Cheers

I've got those glasses. They are lovely. The nose pieces and the rear part of the arms bend to suit your face. I chose the red lenses after looking at this

and deciding. I also have the multilaser red for very bright sunshine, ie holidays etc. Go on, you know you want them!! Hope this helps.

    Cheers AB,

have you got the II's as opposed to just the rydons?

Is multilaser red another non photochromatic lens then?

That is a big help thankyou (The link too) not having either I rely on other peoples opinons!

  • I've been looking at the Rudys' for a while. The Giro specs' were also on my list but I've decided to go with a proper optical manufacturer rather than a bike-parts brand.

I have a couple of pairs of Rudy Project Ekynox SX sunglasses (the SX is for slimmer/smaller faces, so narrower than the Rydons - most shades seem too wide for me but these fit a treat).

Both pairs have photochromic lenses: one polarized photochromic grey (good for beach, driving etc), the other photochromic clear. I use the photochromic clear on the bike and have no complaints. They go fully clear to reasonably dark, so work year round, and respond reasonably quickly (though not fast enough if for e.g. going into a 'tree tunnel' from bright sunshine).

Not used the photochromic red so can't compare to those.

RDT, thanks for that recommendation, I noticed the Ekynox glasses are full frame.

I've noticed with some full frame glasses before, admittedly thick frames, that it hampers my ability to check over my shoulder, does this affect you at all with these glasses?

I'm not small so have Rydons. All the lenses are shown on the 'Lenses' tab at the top of the link I sent you. If you work/travel to London, Condor stock all the Rydon stuff to try.

Thanks for all the replies chaps, this morning I sent all 3 pairs of Helix's back, so the search continues.

I do now have some good leads, but on size wise it would seem to be, probably between the Rydon II's and the Ekynox SX's.

Alas I do not work in London, so will just have to gamble and return via post if they do not suit.

I will investigate the Oakley option as well, I have some Monster pup casual shades, and the quality on them is fabulous.

    Cheers

I think the fact you were supplied with 3 separate pairs of Helix from the same source suggests that you have bought from a bad batch or these are seconds/used. It is definitely not normal. In my experience over the years of buying Specialized items, they are pretty good with respect to Quality Assurance but I suppose it wouldn't be impossible for a bad batch to slip through unnoticed.

I'd suggest you perhaps fire off an email to Specialized, explain the situation and ask for their views on the issue before dismissing the Helix altogether as I think they are very good. I bought 2 pairs over 3 years ago and both pairs have been great and taken a lot of abuse over that period and still going strong.

You are probably right TB, but the thing is these glasses are not made anymore, well as far as I am aware, so stocks are pretty limited, and from what I could see are only availale from 3 retailers.

The finish I wanted is only available from leisurelakes, so my choices were somewhat limited.

I may well e-mail specialized out of interest, but I expect, as they no longer make them, there would be little they would be able to do, even if they wanted too.

    Cheers
