Now I know why lots of people spend a small fortune on stems that prob won't be any different to the cheaper options. Having spent all day trawling websites I have almost been beaten into submission and I'm one click away from buying an overpriced stem.
I will need bars as well in near future.
All I want is a 60 or 70mm at most, oversize 31.8 clamp, 1 1/8 inch reasonably lightweight stem fro general xc and trail centre riding. Every stem I find reviewed that matches the above equirements is either discontinued or out of stock. I have looked at.....
Carbon cycles as recommended by Supersonic
www.carboncycles.cc/?s=0&t=0&c=48&p=609&
out of stock until FEB!!!
Race Face Ride XC but can't get Ride bars to match!
On-one 456 stem
Carbon cycles do have a carbon one at 31.79 but wasn't wanting to pay that much for just a stem!!!

Thanks but I was wanting a shorter stem as running 90mm already. Looking at Exotic carbon one 60mm @ £32Giant Anthem X3 20130

I had a little rant about the very same thing only this week. I'm in exactly the same position, why are they so expensive????
It's only a glorified clamp FFS.Racing snakes. It's not big, and it's not clever0 -
Exactly! Either hugely expensive, far too long or right size and weight but in wrong size clamp diameter!Giant Anthem X3 20130

Have you asked on-one when the 456 will be back in stock?

I got a 90mm generic branded stem from my LBS a couple of years back when I was doing my first SS conversion. It cost about 15 euros so I didn;t really expect much. 2 yars on and it's on its second bike and going strong. I wouldn't use it for jumping but normal XC and trail use it's performing nicely. It is branded XTC but I'm fairly sure it's just a rebadged Taiwanese OEM job
and it scales at 90gr
Otherwise I have a collection of 70mm RF Evolve stems, which cost about 30-40 quid each (depending on who's offering deals and when). They're a bit heavier but quite a lot stiffer and very nicely finished.Everything in moderation ... except beer

If riding an XC race bike is like touching the trail,
then riding a rigid singlespeed is like licking it
... or being punched by it, depending on the day0 -
Im probably going to order one of the RaceFace ride ones for the Kona build, good price plus it matches my bars0

Don't buy from SBR Sports!0

I bought the 25.4mm exotic bars and stem for just over £20 the pair, quality is excellent!
I have brand new white oversized 31.8mm Outland bar/stem combo if interested - £20 for both inc p and p?? stem 50mm length.0 -
Thank you all i have ordered the Race face Ride stem as from active sport as found by Sonic. I had looked at that stem but again couldn't find the oversized version.
Thanks Supersonic.
What are the bars like Big Cheese? I want to replace the stock Kona ones on my cindercone that are 332g with something a bit lighter.Giant Anthem X3 20130 -
And have just got an email from Activesport saying they have cancelled my order due to supplier shortages

Ok does a 31.8 clamp width make much of a difference? If not then I can get the exotic 25.4 stem and bar. Stem will unfortunately have to be the pricier carbon one but all in for 40 odd quid. Or would the Race face one be better. Is there much difference at this price (or any!!)Giant Anthem X3 20130

Decent bars, I don't think they're super light, but they're not heavy either. They look good and they do the job.0 -
just going off subject a little....anybody know what these carbon wheels are like??
http://www.carboncycles.cc/?s=0&t=4&c=44&p=808&
they seem mega-cheap compared to the competition??0 -
I was looking at those the other day. Weight wise seem similar to other normal rimmed set ups of the same price. No info on the hubs really - not sure what you are getting extra here.0
-
yeah that was my next question....'anybody know about those hubs'
i suppose you're getting a bit of sexy looking carbon 'bling'.
shame there's no reviews or decent info about them0
