Ok my LBS would appear to have 1 left of each in my size. The 1.9 has a slightly better spec (brakes) but is alu the 4.5 is carbon. There seems to be £400 difference between the two but is it £400 well spent?
Answers on a postcard...
(Honestly I've thought about buying a road bike for so long now and looked at so many different options it might be better to buy the first one I see and get it over with - I jest of course.... I think.... ;-)

I had a similar dilemma last month.
Both bikes are great - in the end I went for the Madone 4.5 (2010 because I couldn't find a 2009 in stock anywhere), partly because of recommendations from other riders to go carbon and partly because I just liked the looks more, and sometimes you just want to treat yourself! I decided I'm going to have this bike for at least 3 or 4 years so if you spread the price difference over that time it's negligible (man-maths at it's best!)0 -
i bought a 4.5 madone 09 at the start of october,my first carbon bike.I initially liked it because of the way it looked but after after a test ride i had to have it!! i think it is a great bike all round, comfortable but stiff at the same time and like sagalout said,i will also keep this bike for a good few years-def an extra £400 well spent IMO.0

+ 1 for the 4.5
18 months ( & 2000 miles ) later it still makes me smile
go for it...0 -
i have a trek 1.7, same as the 1.9 but cheaper groupset, great bike, fast, light but the wheels are lightweight. i snapped a spoke and i am struggling to replace it as the 278mm length is proving not to be readily available from the LBS.0

I was torn between an 09 1.9 and a madone 5.2. back in september
I was keen on the 5.2 and about to pull the trigger when I asked on here, the consensus was mostly swayed that way.
I got a great deal on the 1.9, tried it and bought it.
i have never looked back and have been more than happy with the bike.
The rationale, was that as it was my first road bike for a while, if I didn't like it, I could sell it easily on Ebay and I was also slightly cautious of carbon, if i crashed it over the winter.
I also considered that if I really got into road cycling i could perhaps sell the 1.9 and upgrade to something quite serious, rather than have a madone sitting around being used occasionaly if I wasn;t that fussed.
No problems with the bike, the Ultegra is a pleasure to use and I have had nothing than a positive response to it
The only thing I will change in the new year is the tyres.
Either way, i can't see you going wrong whichever you choose.0 -
hi, i had a look at your blogspot and i am amazed at similarites between us in terms of targets and weight loss etc. its scary.
well done on weight loss. keep it up. the before and after pictures tell their own story.
I am at 16 stone and still dropping but had to cut out the beers as i got stuck for a few weeks!!
ps get the 4.5. thats what i got and i love it. sadly its hanging up for the winter. boo.older, balder, faster, slimmer, better0 -
Took the 4.5 out today and was well impressed. Having not spent any time on a road bike before I was surprised at the level of confidence it inspired. I think I'll buy it tomorrow once I've figured out how to pay for it ;-)0

Just buy the madone.0

No contest, it's like considering buying a VW Polo instead of an Audi TT!!
Just buy the Madone!!!0 -
I've got a 1.9 and love it, but it seems to be a no-brainer if you've got the spare cash - go for the Madone!
Upgrade the components as they wear out, especially if you're intending to keep it for a few years.0 -
Thanks folks for all the advice - I'm now the very proud owner of a new Madone 4.5 - now the hard work starts... ;-)0
