Just thought I'd let you know if you're in the market for spds, I spotted this deal at Bikes you like and thought it very very good value.

Shoes are around £70 at Wiggle and CRC on their own and the 540's are great, I have a set and find them better than my old 520s :)

In what way do you find the M540 pedals better than the M520?

They keep me clipped in better, I found the 520's were letting go far too easily on the upstroke...may have just been mine though.

They are a bit lighter as well though and attach with an 8 mm allen bolt from the inside rather than a normal pedal spanner attachment so they are a bit tidier looking as well. Not majorly better but I do prefer them.

Ah right, thanks, my M520 pedals don't have a pedal spanner attachment either which I see as a negative as I'd rather have the option of using a pedal spanner in case of problems removing them.
  • if pedals have spanner flats then you want the axle to have a stop so they don't eat your cranks.

If you can pull out of your spds then increase the tension/new cleats!

The 8mm allen keys are better because you can get better purchase with them.

M540 have better bearings and sealing over the 520's

I didn't post detailed info about this but I used to adjust them up a notch after every ride and still had problems with them letting go at very inconvenient moments. When I took them off they appeared to be at the end of their adjustment? Which was why I bought some new 540s for my new bike and I haven't had to touch them so far, with the same cleats as I was using before.
