  • Often. I presume you mean cartridge type BB's
Check the width of your BB shell 68mm is English 70 Italian. An English BB has a left and a right hand thread Italian R/H thread only.

Sure can. English or Italian is what you need to worry about. They're 2 different thread types.

Yep, no problems. Measure it yourself and buy online, or take it to your LBS and see what they have.

www.velosolo.co.uk has lots of BBs that suit steel frames with JIS or ISO square tapers so you can use your original chainset
  • Cheers, it's a 68-122.5mm English BB. Is the square taper standard i.e. will it fit my old TA cranks?
  • Two types of square taper. ISO (Italian) JIS(Japanese) Has your old BB got a label on it?

No label other than the makers name.

What's wrong with the old one?
Is there play in it or is it change for the sake of change?

Looks like it could do with a service judging by the rusty coloured gunk around the spindle.

I don't think it owes you anything after 28 years service!
