Xmas bike for 13 year old - Trek 4300?

Looking for a new MTB for Xmas for eldest who's 13 in Jan - he's seen the Trek 4300 in green which he likes, but just wondered if the spec is okay for the cash (£375). He did see the Carrera Vulcan disc which is £280 at the moment but once he saw the Trek he changed his mind about the Halfords offering.

Would rather keep to around the £250 mark if possible, but I'm happy to pay the extra if it's worth it - is the Trek £100 better, or are there other hardtails better for the budget? Will be used for tracks and XC, rather than technical or anything extreme.
Carlsberg don't make cycle clothing, but if they did it would probably still not be as good as Assos

Why not have a look at the Carrera Kraken? Better than both of those - and they are good for the money.

Just my opinion but jr and his mates (all 13) would rather listen to Michael Buble than be seen on an XC MTB. They like DJ/trials bikes with slammed seats - Chuckers, Brass, 24Seven, that sort of thing.

He definitely wants an XC MTB - and a new roadbike but I know what I'm looking at with road bikes.

  • The Carrera is a cracking deal, but to kids, the way a bike looksand image is important, and I guess the most important thing is that he is going to ride it.
Probably best to get him to test ride both, first.

The spec is average but being a Trek the frame will be really nice, and they do a good range of sizes so should be able to get a good fit.

Yeah - it's the image thing that's gone through my mind. He's at that age where his mates will rip the pi55 if it hasn't got the badge so want something that will tick that box without being charged the earth for it. If it was down to bike spec I guess one of the Rockrider 5's would be the best bet (I have an 8.1 and have no isses with it).

I'll get him to have a look at the Carrera, and Rockrider, to see if I can sway him.
