Wheel problems

I've got some concerns with my wheels. I've got a Giant FCR4 09 that I've been using for commuting 24miles every day for about 6 months. My brakes started to fade last week, so I thought no problem I'll just change them. Whilst swapping them over I notice that there is what appears to be swarf embedded in the rubber block and swarf in the general muck and crud. The wheel rim itself looks fairly scored. I changed the brakes over and now with in a couple of days I've notice yet more swarf. Is my wheel breaking up? The bike is less that 6 months old so I feel that I should be able to take it back to my LBS. I'm new to road biking, Is damage to wheel rims expected or not?

Cheap brake blocks tend to do this. Unless you clean the swarf out of the blocks regularly it makes matters worse. Get some Koolstop Salmon blocks to fit your brakes. You will get better braking and stop the scoreing.
  • I was running on Giant's original equipment block, so I guess they can be classed as cheap, but I still wouldn't expect then to damage the rims. Surely they are not fit for purpose if they damage the bike.

Even Shimano ones from a few years back did this. They stopped you did'nt they so are 'fit for purpose'. The scoreing is why I went on to Koolstop which do not do this and stop you better especially in the wet. All blocks will wear the rims in winter conditions due to the abrasive action of the crap from the roads.
