I'm trying my best to persuade my wife to buy me the hope vison 4 for christmas, but would the vision 2 do instead? I currently use a 'dinotte 200l' for commuting and night riding but would like to try something brighter. would the vision 2 be noticeably brighter than the dinnotte or should i go for the vision 4, and is the vision 4 designed for road use or more for off road?

Depends on whether you believe L&M's BS light tests as I believe they reckoned that the Hope 2 was putting out closer to 200 lumens than the 480 it's supposed to.

I don't have a Hope 2 or 4 (got a Lupine Wilma 6CL 830 lumens) but using my light at 60% setting which in theory is close to the output of the Hope 2 I doubt you would be too unhappy for road use at all, saving you nearly £100 squids on the Hope 4. I think you would want a helmet light as well for off roading at that output though.

It's certainly worth taking a look around the web to compare beams mate (Wiggle do a beam comparison for instance http://www.wiggle.co.uk/Front_Lights_Br ... /index.htm) as their are plenty of comparison posts/sites out there. The Wiggle comparison of the Hope 4 vs Hope 2 suggests that the 2 has the better throw and the 4 the wider spread, though how they fair in reality is anyones guess.

One thing I would say, is bright lights light up a hell of a lot less road when there is rain or mist in the air, so if you can afford the brighter one get the brighter one.

Have you considered the Lupine Tesla as well? Had one on test, beautiful light..can be had for around about the same as the Hope 4 (slightly less really), not quite as bright but damn fine build with a wonderful reflector.

And if you can get through this thead without being told you are wasting your money, you should buy a P7 from China, then I will be amazed!
  • You can see for yourself just how bright the Vision 4 is here with the light test page 77, click video,

I would save yourself £100 and get the hope 2 it is way bright enough for country roads i had the 4 and it was so bright i usually used it on half setting if i got another i would get the 2 they are very good lights and worth the money i now use an mte p7 flashlight which gives plenty of light for my country commute and for only £20 they are superb
  • yes i think you maybe right! looking at the light beams in the link above the hope 2 looks good enough, thanks for the help everybody :D
  • I have just cycled home for the first time using my new Hope 2.

The 16 of the 17 miles of tracks and roads are all unlit and totally dark.

I used the lowest setting of the light whilst on the road and the next to lowest whilst on tracks - I have to say it works astonishingly well and easily meets my requirements.

I haven't tried the Hope 4 but I assume that it must be huge overkill....

  • I upgraded from the Hope 1 which was really bright but not quite bright enough for my morning rides (which are dark country roads).

I generally have the Hope 2 on the medium setting which is adequate for me. Used on that setting, I generally have to re-charge once a week.

Just had to send it back to Hope to fix a dodgy connection in the battery lead. Sent it to Hope without any proof of purchase and was fixed free and fed ex'd back within a day!

Whilst I have no doubt about the quality of Hope lights, if you want similar power, try the Luu lights from Planet-X or the Magic Shine from DealExtreme - same light output for a whole lot less. I ride unlit country roads and prefer that approaching drivers dim their lights and slow down.

  • I have been using the Hope vision 4 on a daily basis for the last year and a half, my thoughts on it are that it rocks, the quality is worth paying for. Hope are good at sorting out any problems that occur as well, I have two batteries which i alternate and one died just after a year of use, outside of warranty, I returned to Hope and got a new battery returned back again saving me £70 for a replacement.

I use mine on the bars in conjunction with a Helmet mounted Hope vision 1 for a spot beam as the Vision 4 although bright, is a little floodly, you can see where you are going and cars can most importantly see you coming. I highly recommend the vision 4. I've even considered a second head unit for the bars because in my opinion you can never have enough light!

Magicshine on the bars plus a Fenix on the helmet. Two are better than one.

I've had the vision 2 for 2 years now.
Awesome light.Bright, usable lighting that lights up where your going.Battery life is good.
The best thing about Hope is the back up they provide. They are well reknowned for customer service second to none.
We deal with Hope on a regular basis and nothing is ever too much trouble.

The trouble with having an open mind, of course, is that people will insist on coming along and trying to put things in it.
