Prevention

To prevent the rear mech hanger from bending do not lay/transport the bike on its right side.
This seems to be a problem for beginners as well as experienced riders.

Possible indicaitons of a bent hanger

Bad shifting
Sometimes the bike will hesitate to shift in one direction but not the other.
Scarred up mech this could be an indication the bike has a bent/damaged hanger or mech.

This is by no means a complete list. However, it could be a good starting point for troubleshooting.

Detection

Use a rear mech alignment tool and check alignment at the 3, 6, 9, and 12 o'clock positions.
In an emergency you can use an allen wrench inserted into the rear mech installation bolt at the 3, 6, 9, and 12 o'clock positions to detect if the hanger is bent.

There are some good viedos that can be googled using bent derailleur hanger.
