winter tights

Can anyone recommend some winter tights that are:
- bib
- padded
- have some measure of windproofing
- preferably under £100

A mate has bought some DHB tights but he's unhappy with them as he says they're a bit thin and he also doesn't like wearing shorts or padded inserts with them. He likes Assos but not the price.

Cheers
Paul

I have some padded and unpadded Gore ones.

They are very good however I actually prefer the unpadded ones and wear them with my padded shorts underneath.

These are the unpadded ones, a good deal here (although mine have the hoops at the bottom of the leg). Very pleased with them (I am normally an Assos / Rapha tart)

    Cheap Gore at Evans!

Decathlon had some for £29.95 - reduced by 45% They are padded and have a windproof front.
  • Stay away from WIggle's DHB stuff, it really is poor quality and not worth wearing.

I did buy a pair of Northwave from Evans last year (can't find them sorry) that are thermoroubaix that are pretty good, comfy and warm, I think they were around £60.

I have a pair of Rapha unpadded winter tights that are awesome, sadly they are £170 this year!!!

Got Altura bib tights that are padded - should be £70 but LBS did me a deal on these and Specialized Gel Golves for £70 all in instead of £97. :D

  • Santini Storm Gel Twist - fantastic: http://www.prendas.co.uk/details.asp?ty ... =9&ID=1323

Wonderful padding, really warm and windproof ( I wore then today in temps of 3C  and 30mph headwinds - effing cold) and my legs were toasty warm. They wear well too and are not too pricey for what you get

A lot of happy wearers would disagree with you there I guess, given there are over 200 reviews for their 2009 Merston Bib Tights alone and they still come off with 4+ out of 5 average, which suggests that only the minority have issues with them.

I am no fan of DHB in particular, but I have had far more issues with other makes of late, such as Spiuk, Pearl Izumi and dare I say it even a faulty pair of Assos shorts. Would I say that any of them are poor quality, nope, just I had an issue with an item from their ranges.

In fact if you get any DHB clothing and it is a good fit for you and their are no quality issues with it, I doubt you would find better value/performance anywhere tbh. And the best bit is that Wiggle refund or exchange you (and refund postage) on any quality issue with DHB stuff without question, even if the item is months old. Try and get that sort of service from anyone else!

I have the Gore ones...multipanel, padded and very nice.

But IMO its worth paying the extra and getting the Assos Winter LL S5 - it really is a different class to anything else out there.

I have the DHB Merstons and they are splendidly warm and comfortable. Now entering their second winter. Double thickness over the knees, decent pad, and a comfort zip for those with a penis like a u-boat periscope.

  • I got a set of De Marchi Contour plus tights about a month or so ago. Over the moon with them. Plenty warm, pad is spot on and they have the all important (for me anyway) foot loops.

Oh, and got em for £50 odd off the bay of dismay! Thinking about it, I may have to get another pair.
  • Thanks for the range of great advice. My mate is considering his options. Santini sizing options limited so it could be Gore...

Do you find the Gore ones warm enough?

I bought a pair from Wiggle and they seem really thin.
Much thinner than my DHB Merston 3/4's.

I actually used my Merston 3/4's all winter last year, even through the snow.
When it was really cold, I put some leg warmers under them, and they were lovely.

I would definitely recommend going for unpadded, this allows you to wear them on consecutive days without the need to wash them.

It's hard to justify expensive tights, I had a pair of Lusso Roubaix bib tights that lasted several years of mountain biking, were comfortable, tough and cheap. I have since bought Rapha and Assos bib tights, and the Rapha ones look nice and perform okay, the Assos are a superior product in both material and fit, and considerably nicer to wear than any others I have tried over the years.

So when I said it's hard to justify expensive tights, I obviously somehow managed it....
