Windproof jacket is the key, any half-decent base layer will do, who cares if it smells afterwards that`s what washing machines are for. I do have a helly hansen ice crew which is half merino and half not, perfect for when it gets really cold and it doesn`t smell.

I got an Endura Baa Baa (Merino) long sleeve base layer last week.
Wiggle do them for £31.49. It is lovely and cosy and dries quickly....which is just what you want.
Perhaps a bit more expensive than some others, but it is very nice.

Hope yours lasts longer than mine did. Mine fell to bits in about 4 months. Was used a lot however still I expected a lot longer out of this.

Have the Helly Hansen too and it has lasted several years now and still no signs of it falling to bits however I do agree that they tend to stink.

I loved the merino because it didn't so looking out for a decent merino that will not fall to bits in a few months. I want years out of it

I use Nike Pro Compression. Dead cheap and really really good.
At this time of year I find one of them and my Assos Airjack 851 is poifick.
When it gets to freezing then my Gore Tool jacket comes out of the cupboard...

    Baselayer stays the same...

Helly Hanson Lifa works for me, and last for ever.

all of the above. They've been around for years & if you shop around a bit are cheap enough.

+ 1 for Icebreaker. An absolute must for northern Scotland from about now. I was out in mine last weekend. Did about 62 miles in wind, rain and, earlier in the day, bloody freezing. Kept me warm as toast but never felt overcooked, even climbing the Cairn 'o mount.
I have only two things to say to that; Bo***cks

I use the Rapha ones a fair bit, but my fave on colder days is one from Vanguard. Pretty cheap, but very comfortable, warm, and well fitted.

I use howies merino baselayers, but they really aren't cheap. they are looooooovely though, and i've got my money's worth out of them on the commute alone.

I find merino too hot if the temp is above -10 and you are going reasonably hard on the bike. Any base layer that wicks the sweat away from your skin will be good.
Windproof jacket (not waterproof) + smelly helly does me.

Where are you from that you are cycling at -10? I am guessing Arctic Circle somewhere.

Personally I have never been over hot in merino at anything under +20 8)

Below -10 was skiing/walking in winter mountains rather than cycling.
I've been down to c. -6 cycling around here (rural UK) in a smelly Helly and a windproof jacket (Endura Windchill). Keeping ears warm and still being able to hear is more of a chalenge...

You should get a Buff polar, my girlfriend got me one last xmas and its really good, you can make it into a balaclava type thing and look like a ninja. But it works well, i was going out in really cold temps (0 degrees or slightly below freezing) last winter and was fine up top.

On baselayers, i have a couple of DHB ones from wiggle that work very well, got my girlfriend a Craft one also from wiggle and she is very happy with that, they are all about £15-£25 i think.

Ive also got an altura night vision that is amazing in cold temps, just with a base layer underneath.
