Hi Everyone,
Reasonably new to road cycling, everyday communte of 20 miles. It's my new love. There is only one problem over the course of the weekends i am a bit stuck with going for a ride with my father. I mean i'm all up for the father - son bonding thing but every weekend just isn't on. I live 30 miles north of newcastle (up the a1) and was wondering if anyone knows of any clubs near here.

Thanks

Where in the North East are you? 30 miles north of Newcastle up the A1 puts you in or around the Alnwick area, there-or-thereabouts. I'm from the same area and I've never stumbled across any local clubs and I believe the nearest is WANSBECK CC followed by GOSFORTH RC. There's a more comprehensive list at:

    www.britishcycling.org.uk/web/site/BC/c ... es&crpp=20

You'd think, given the area we live in, there'd be a cycling club to take advantage of the topography we have on our doorstep but here we are left wanting!
Society is like a stew. You have to stir things up now and again otherwise the scum will rise to the top.
  • Your almost exactly right i live in shilbottle just 3 miles south. Are you close ? I was considering the wansbeck cc but it's a fair distance and would add an extra 40 or so miles to the ride. I know with the scenary we have here is great and no-one seems to have taken full advantage of that. Something needs to be sorted.
  • well thats three of you for a start.
  • well thats three of you for a start.

Are you close by as well ?
  • no im way down in toon, but was just surggesting that the three of you meet up and start your own club.
  • Hi folks,

As a member of Wansbeck CC I'd just like to drop a quick note informing folk that we shall be heading out for a ride this coming Sunday if anyone fancys it... It will be a nice easy pace, 40-50 miles, meeting at the Forge Inn, Ulgham at 10am... No one gets left behind so open to all :)

We dont have a website yet (Its been worked on!) but we have a facebook group with all the info on forthcoming rides :)

    Cheers,

    Simon.

There aren't enough clubs really. The Gosforth one is my closest but I have a fear of being dropped quite easily :D so haven't joined their rides out.

Then again, I was supposed to be heading out with Lardlover and A.N.Other off here but again, time and work commitments have scuppered my riding this last couple of months.

I'm in Rothbury, so reasonably close. I must admit to only having a road bike since Feb this year having been Mountain Biking for years. My road rides tend to be local such as Elsdon/Winters Gibbet, Morpeth, Alwinton and the borders etc. so haven't ventured too far as yet. That said, I'm always keen to try new places (providing I don't have to pedal between Rothbury and Alnwick, there's some REALLY NASTY climbs) so if there's going to be an outing, count me in!

Where would you suggest a good meeting point would be if you fancied it. just out of interest.
  • I would be interested; the more the merrier as they say. A good meeting point would be either Swarland or Longframlington, depending on where the route was to take us. Unfortunately, I work shifts and would not be able to every weekend, but some weekends are better than none at all.
Now our potential club has two whole members!! Woohoo!!

You weren't the WANSBCK CC rider atop an old school, bronze coloured bike I caught and passed near the Scots Gap/Morpeth/rothbury crossroads a few weeks back are you? Whoever it was, they weren't a happy bunny!

    Jesus, this is hard work

Turn up on a Saturday. That's Gosforth's beginners ride, typically 40-60 miles depending on if you go in the fast or slower split, no one get's left behind (ever). I've only been a member since Summer but it's a great club. If you fancy getting muddy check out www.midaircrisis.co.uk for Newcastle mountain bike club.

Definatley See if this gathers any more interest. But i would be more than happy to go for a cycle. Swarland or longfram would be fine for me. What kind of equipment are you using at the mo then.
  • There are several groups that meet in the area...
Alnwick Tri Club have a group out on a saturday and sunday leaving from Willowburn Leisure Center in alnwick.
There are a group of road cyclists that meet in Alnwick at 8am on sat and sunday at the war memorial and ride between 3 and 5 hours sometimes with a cafe stop.

There is also 2 cycle specific spin classes at willowburn on tuesday and thursday nights that the tri club organise

Tuesday evenings there is also a group meet at the Trap pub (broomhill) and do a interval/training session around the lit/unlit roads.
There are plans for a social group ride on wednesday evenings in the summer (2010)leaving from breeze bikes at amble catering for all abilities at 6pm.
  • I'm in the toon....looking at joining the gosforth chaps when I get my Bianchi from home (Lancs)
  • hey dg74, get yourself out with Gosforth, I'm ashamed to say I've only been out on one ride with them, but I do have an excuse. It was my son's birthday the following weekend, then I was working the next, now I'm currently sans bike :( (waiting for my cycle to work voucher). They were really friendly and never left anyone behind. I ended up on the Sunday ride and went out for the longer ride. I managed to keep up.........just! was getting dropped on the hills but I made it back to the group, even took my turn on the front

Anyhoo, I was intending to get out on the Saturday morning ride, work permitting, maybe a few Sunday rides too, rather than vegetating over the winter
I'm trying to get 636sean along too.........

    Dickie.F.M / mattbarnes

I'm in Morpeth, perhaps we could arrange to meet up for a ride? I'm certain 636sean will come along too. Perhaps a 3rd and 4th member for your 'clurb'
We tend to either head out towards Rothbury otherwise we head south.

As for local 'clurbs', Breeze Bikes in Amble have a few riders (that ride fast    ). I was thinking of asking if I could join in bt having a look at their times for the Cyclone etc put me right off :(

PM me if you fancy it.
  • The Breeze lads are a very mixed group and if you turn up with them you will not get left behind!!
There are a couple of them that are FAST but there are a couple that go out in their 60s and average about 15mph.
You won't know if you don't try but any group should always make sure you dont get left behind it also depends on the route if its hilly it will be hard if its flat and you are in a group you will be amazed at the speed you will average with very little effort.

    Alright there Lard?

I'm sorely tempted by the lads at Gossie (not in that sense like, ye knaa) but at the moment am working all sorts of shifts due to lack of staff. Though I'm off for a week as of next week so intend to A) get my bike back to Steel's to be sorted out gear wise, and B) ride a bit.

Took me ages to get my voucher for the CTW scheme - finally it dropped through the door and I waited another 4 weeks for my bike to arrive. 14 weeks with no bike!!! Killer!

So aye, the new Spesh is great, really good to ride and a complete mile muncher. Shame the rider isn't :D
  • That's one of the reasons I'm reluctant to join any club, I just can't commit to everyweek. Sometimes it can be a few weeks in a row.

I need another job, one that's preferably 9 till 5 with no weekend working.

    That would be nice.

Seriously, go along on the Saturday, they seem a nice bunch (the Sunday guys anyway  ), I will be back, just not sure when (work and bike factors there!).

Definatly up for that. As with yourself i work shifts. My usual weekend day off is sunday. I'm in shilbottle. So not far. Would defo be up for that. See if i can get some more people interested.
  • Hi,
Went out with the Breeze lads yesterday evening on the training meet. Excellent group of riders.
Was the first time i had really done any group riding. They were great in explaning how i should pace myself. Initially very much of a shock riding at other peoples pace.
Really enjoyed my self and haven't learned so much in a long time.

    Thanks Lads

    Hi,

I'm in Stakeford and cycle round most of Northumberland particularly up to shilbottle and across rothbury and out towards kielder (never made it all the way yet but still trying)

Usually do about 50 miles at about an average speed of 13mph these days as haven't been exercising the old legs too much.

Planning on going out with the Wansbeck guys on sunday if theres a meet on and the weather isn't too manky (cant find my wooly trousers at the mo). Ping me if you fancy meeting up any weekend or on an evening.
