Not until I move house anyway

This is my last day at my present office, as work is moving over to the other side of the M1 which more than doubles my commute and means the bike is a complete non starter :cry::cry:

I've sold the house and am waiting for the paperwork to go through while looking for somewhere to rent nearer to where I'll be working from tomorrow.

However, I am looking for somewhere specificlly to allow me to commute in over a reasonable distance: between 6 & 10 miles if I can help it.... and all the places I've looked achieve this with nothing but country lanes between where I want to be and work (but there is one BIG BIG hill, so big it actually has a damn name!)

I could move to the village where work is, and have nothing more than a couple of miles at the most to cycle in... but I want to do more each day. Does this mean I am a hopeless case? Looking for somewhere to live specifically so I can ride my bike each day.

Oh well... no more bridleway and tales of ghosts, dumb teenage girls and glorious sunrises on empty roads <sigh>

    Take up dogging.
  • Where has your work moved too then? I'm stuck living in Stapleford and commuting to Derby, but we're hoping to move to donnington as soon as we can.

You dont have to commute along the quickest possible route.

As far as I can see it doesn't matter where you live you couls make your commute as long or short as you like, just plan a suitable route.

Ruddington is where I'll be based so really anywhere around there. A great place recommended by one of the guys on here has gone  but I won't really be in a position to pick somewhere until nearer the time anyway. I guess I'm looking for places in an arc spanning from Kegworth in the West, Wymeswold-ish in the South and say Stanton on the Wolds in the East.

The roads around there are great, and I'm hearing of lots of cycling routes from people in the area, so that looks good as well :D

The only fly in the ointment is Bunny Hill..... :?

Move close to work and then you have the choice of taking a longer or shorter route as you please! If you're running late or it's raining, go straight to work, if you're up early and it's sunny, go round the houses. If it's 2 miles away from work, you could also take up running there and back, or even walking. I used to run to and from work sometimes - 6 miles each way.

It's for reasons like this that I don't want to move further away from work. You can always make a commute longer, but cannot necessarily shorten it. KB - focus on the former, and the bright side. :)

I live in East Bridgford, the roads round us/Stanton are great, check out some of the sherwood cc routes that are uploaded on here. I use some of them as training runs and they are v nice. Fairly easy riding too.
