Avid lever query

Hi all.
I've discovered my juicy 5 levers (from a few years back i suspect) have a 'forward position'. If you push the lever, rather than pull for braking, they click and stay forward by about an inch at the end of the lever. They both do it by the same amount, and its clearly something they are designed to do, rather than a fault; just wondering if anyone knew of the purpose for it?
Thanks, Robin.
