Hi,
ive just bought a new Marin B17 which im really pleased with. However, the forks (Rockshox 302 U turn) seem to rattle a lot when im gunning it downhill. Ive tried tightening every bolt I can see. It could be the forks or the headset Im not sure. any ideas please? Is this a common problem?

Thanks
Rich

if it's a new bike, it could be the headset "settling" or bedding in.
Try holding the front brake, and rocking the bike backwards and forwards, see if there's any play in it. Try feeling around the stem, or crown fork with your fingers whilst rocking it to detect any movement.

if it IS the headset, then loosen the bolts that clamp your stem onto the fork steerer tube, then tighten the top-cap until the play JUST goes away, then re-tighten the bolts that clamp it in place.

where is the noise coming from?

  • Its difficult to pin down exactly wherre its coming from but I think its the forks rather than the headset. I have a similar pair of Rockshox toras on another bike, that dont make any unwanted rattles!

Could be the spring rattling in the stanchion. Many have wraps on to prevent this.

does it happen at all travel lengths?
so left leg or right leg?

remove wheel, remove brakes, remove fork from bike and shake.

Or has the noise now gone?

  • Yes, happens at all travel lengths. Could ell be the spring yes. difficult to say exactly which side rattle is coming from, but its probably the left, which is the side of the spring I think. I dotn want to pull the forks apart thought as they are brand new. Do you think this is a defect? Maybe the shop I bought it from could fix it, but I have a feeling they may just fob me off.

if you dont want to take the forks off take it back to the shop and get them to work out what it is. Rattles are notorious for not being what you think they are.

It may not be the fork.
