Setting correct front derailleur cable tension?

Initially i thought: Set the bike with the chain on the largest rear cog and the smallest front cog, then along with the brake lever tension set almost completely 'in', you now have the correct tension and can screw in the cable tension holding screw, then take the rest from here (i.e. setting high/low etc).
Is this correct as i have read mixed guides on configuring the front derailleur properly

it depends on what rear mech you have, a top normal or a low normal.
