hi all,
Ive got shimano alivio gear on my saracen. Untill today I thought it was very good....then I rode a friends bike with sram x9 gear and discovered that in comparision my gears are rubbish lol
mine tend to ghost shift and skip gears when im off sadle and powering up hills, im constantly adjusting them and its growing irritating.
had a look on merlin and like these to:

Sram x9 set:

shimano xt set:

thats the sort of budget i have, whats the general consensous? also any other suggestions? thanks in advance!

TBH it sounds like your exisiting gears need setting up better or new cables. Or maybe the chain and cogs are worn.
  • Ive tried everything I can, the bikes only a month old and its only done 100 miles in that time....they are fine then after a few days just go funny again....? I dunno really, I just want good gear on my bike and not have to re-do the gears after every few rides.
theres always the chance im a complete spoon and not doing it properly of course!
I guess the sram's just felt miles better, im not worried about gear numbers cos I rarely come of middle chainring tbh.
    just want something reliable!

Strange. I ran Alivio on my Ruckus, is fine.

Once you have set the limit stops then all you ened o do is tweak the tension with the barrel adjuster.
  • hmmm, il have another tweak tommorow and see how it goes.....
how long did you have the alivio's for?
and in your honest opinion do you think my bike is worth upgrading? if so what would you do first? I plan on keeping it for 2 years I guess.

    Honestly, no.

What I would do first? Probably single speed it. Guess there's not many hills around your area to be worried about, its the most reliable system ever, and you've already said you tend to stay in one gear most of the time.

You seem to have been on the silly pills again. This is a good bike, nice frame and decent parts.

Service the gears and then think about a better fork.

  • thanks for info guys, I had a look at some forks and the rockshox dart 3 seems good for the money? I was thinking perhaps the shocks would be a better choice to upgrade anyway...
as for single speed that wouldnt work for me cos although I stay mainly on the middle ring im constantly changing on the cassette esp on hills lol

I think the consensus will be that you're much better off paying a little extra for a Tora.
