Creaking pivots.. Marin MV

Hi,

Just a quick question, probably with a simple answer!

I've got an '08 Mount Vision, which has recently started developing a creak every time I apply pressure to the pedals.. I originally thought that it could be the BB (XT hollowtech), so I took that out and gave it a service.. it wasn't that.. Not anything to do with the pedals either, I checked them..

So, I tightened the pivots, and it seemed to stop for about 5 minutes, then came back...

Is there a certain torque I should be tightening them to? How tight should they be? I cant imagine its the bearings, as I've never ridden it out of its comfort zone (well.. not too much anyway!! )

It's nothing major (afaik), the bike still works perfectly, but I dont like creaks.. lol

Any advice? (Thanks in advance) :D

Sorry to drag this up, but it's still creaking, if anything, worse than before!

I've checked most things, and can't see what it is myself, it definitely sounds as though its either BB or Pivot related, as it's each time pressure is applied in my pedal strokes, on both sides. I can't find the manual, or anything online to tell me..

Don't get paid for another week, so can't get it to my lbs.. anybody have any suggestions or ideas, please?
  • Try applying copper slip to all the contact points on the seat post clamp & rails, also behind the rear mech hanger. Plus remove clean and retighten the skewers.

Gotta be worth a try

I too hate any creaks and the above worked for me when it sounded more serious than it was.

I agree with fatbloke. My Marin also creaked for ages until it dawned on me that when I stood up the noise stopped. I now apply occasional coats of aerosol lube to the underside of the saddle. No creaks anymore.

I'll give that a go pal, thanks for your advice

If all else fails, I'll have to give in and get her to the shop.. that, along with a monster dentist bill, I'm cancelling christmas!

    Again, thanks fbfw :)

If anyboy else has suggestions also, please feel free to add.. I'm open to anything!

I've got an 04 MV, bearings are in different places and probably different covers, but they still get mud and grit on them.

Perhaps mud/grit has got behind the covers. about twice a year (or when the creaking gets unbearable) I take out all the bolts, clean and dab some grease and replace. i do this one at a time so i don't get things confused. Be careful cleaning, don't squirt aerosol 'lube' in there, just clean out any mud and grit, a touch of grease and replace.

You can also check on any stuck bearings, I don't take out the bearings but I have had a few go. They were replaced under warranty.

Cheers again guys, I could probably do with stripping the whole bike (checking pivots/bearings etc), but am always worried about forgetting to put something back!!

Andrewjoseph, I'll take your advice too, and do them one at a time.. like I said, I'd rather not fork out however much it'd be for a full service before trying everythig possible!!

At least, like above, the bearings have a lifetime warranty if that was to be the problem! :)

my marin creaked did the pivot bolts up it was fine for a while then did it again. you could try and tighten them and put thread lock on them. also go over ya full bike starting at the back and nip each nut again. you will find it will go. alot of ppl forget to re tighten sussers they need doing from what i read

My wolf ridge developed a bad creak after riding underwater in Innerleithen. It seemed to come from the swingarm, but it turned out to be the rear hub. When the wheel got submerged, the grease got washed out, causing the creak.
Swingarm pivot bearings have been through hell, but the bearing caps have kept out any trace of muck or water (I'm guessing your bearing arrangement is the same as mine)

You could be onto something there.. I've not actually thought about the problem being in the hub, as I was sure the sound is central, rather than behind me.. but, it could make sense, every time I pedal, that engages the hub, so there could be something in that!

It's weird, if I stamp and mash the pedals, the creaking goes, it's just when I apply a slight bit of pressure (like riding uphills or on flat, getting up to speed).

Like you say mate, I've essentially got the same arrangement as you, and the bearings etc are well protected..

Never serviced a hub myself before, but I assume the Hope pro2 is pretty simple? I'll check for vids etc online. Thanks again!

hope ProII, just knock out the bearings, replace with new ones.
I've got cheapo OEM hubs, so what I did was push the bearing cartdirdges out, prize off the dust seal, pack with grease, refit the dust seal, refit the bearings, and bob was my mother's brother in law.
Same thing happened last year on my other bike, which has an old Hope Bulb hub. Creaking was, like yours occuring at peculiar loads.
The way I found out it was the hub was when turning my bike over to strip down the swingarm bearings. As i graddeb the rear wheel to flip the bike over, it creaked. So I carried on fiddling, and found I could cause the creaking by applying a side-load to the rear wheel, wven whilst holding the swingarm stationary.

    Hmm, interesting..

I've already tried applying side loads to the hub/rear wheel, and it doesn't seem to creak then. Bloody bikes!!

Still, I will try everything mentioned above, hopefully that'll fix the problem. The servicing og the Pro2's sounds easy enough, so I'll look into that too.

Sure do, but I'd like to think that it's not the bearings, after such a short amount of time! :?

If all else fails though, I'll give Marin a shout.. :)
  • Have you checked the frame thoroughly ?

My mates Vision had a small crack around the swingarm area.

He was gutted until MARIN swapped the whole frame out for him - and they bundled a new set of forks in too because the new Vision had longer forks !!!!

It took him ages to notice the crack as it only became visible under pressure.

Everytime I get a creak on my Epic I'm hoping the same

I have had a look over the frame, couldn't see anything, but I'll have a proper check over when I pull the bike to bits, trying to find this creaking!!

A spanking new frame would be nice though.. although not keen on the grey & white paintjob..

(Although I'd rather it not be the frame, I can't imagine not riding for too long! I need my weekend fix!)
