Any problem using a 7 speed chain with 8 speed drivetrain?
Hi
I want to use a 7 speed chain I have knocking around, specifically one of these:
http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Mode ... elID=25425
with an 8 speed road drivetrain. As the chain dimensions appear the same as 8 speed specific chains (1/2" x 3/32"), I can't see a problem, but that CRC page states 'max speed of sprocket:7'. Is that just marketing nonsense or will it really not work?
Thanks

Maybe. I am using a Shimano HG40 on an 8 speed block. It is supposed to be 6-8 spd, but there is very little space between the chain and the next largest cog. I can just get a piece of paper in this space, but when chain angles are bad, it can touch.
I am looking at a 9spd chain for an 8spd block.0
