Has anyone any experience of these or a valuable opinion?

I hope Pro II's on two of my mtb's but I'm not sure how Hope translate to the road market.

A Pro 3 and Open Pro combo front and rear weigh 1738g before any spokes, nipples, rim tape etc, etc and will come it at what, £300ish?

Fulcrum Racing 5s weigh in at 1605g inclusive of everything, and can be had for similar amounts if you shop around online.

    Sorted.
  • The hopes look and sound and feel sexy though, you can get whatever spoke/colour combo you like and the fulcrums look cheap! I have two sets of hope pro-race 3's sapim spokes and open pros with coloured alu nipples and they are SEXY!!!!
  • Thanks,

I like the aesthetics of the Hope hubs and being able to choose the hub colour without paying King and Tune prices is a plus (red or gold).

If I were to go with a set of factory wheels it would be Mavics or Easton over Fulcrums based purely on the look of them alone (I am a tart!).
  • Beg to differ with Jimbo:

    Open pro's 850gm per pair.
    Pro3's 388 per pair.
    Sapim Laser spokes - 278gm for 64
Nipples (brass) 64 gm per 64, ally 20 gram for 64.

Total = 1580 more or less.

How do I know this? I have a set. I'd go handbuilt every time, for what my opinion is worth...

I have a set of Racing 5s, they weigh a lot more than that!

    Handbuilts every time

  • I've just bought a set of these as my winter training wheels - I wanted something strong, durable, weather proof (hubs), good to ride and pretty much bombproof. I'm biased but I think they are a bit of a classic training wheelset.... I'm looking forward to getting them on my bike. Currently on my summer wheels (Easton EA90SLX) but only for another 250km - looking forward to doing a comparison.

I love the idea of a handbuilt set of Open Pro's on Hope hubs but I also love stealth wheels. Hope hubs are just way to noisy for me. :(

You need Open Pro/CX Ray/Dura Ace then...
  • thanks,

Hope hubs have the Marmite effect when it comes to the noise. I really like the sound of my Hope Pro II's

I'm not sure yet as I may just go factory for convenience. Shame Merlin don't do a road build yet.

I have Open Pros on Ultegra hubs and they are soooo quiet.

If I was building another set, I'd go for Hope hubs as I like a bit of a tick when I coast.

    Personal preferences, eh?

Then I may as well go for the Dura Ace 7850's eh? I love the look and colour options with the Hope's, I just don't like the noise. So when the wheels get replaced then I think I will go for factory built.

    They are awesome wheels...

My bad re. wheel weights  My geek-o-matic weight-weenie spreadsheet (yes, I know...) has cocked up somehow.
  • I agree with appletrees re the weight of these wheels (light).
BUT I've had loads of problems with the rear wheel, Open Pro 28 Sapim. The non drive side spokes continually breaking at the hub. The guy who built them reckons there is too great a distance from the spoke hole to the edge of the hub flange so the spoke rubs the hub at this point & fatigues after 500 miles or so. Contacted Hope but they couldn't help.

  • Mine are heavier than appletrees at 1692gms including rim tape and using DT Comp spokes. Still pretty good for what I hope will be a strong set of wheels for winter.

  • Does anyone know the spoke length needed for hope 3 on open pros, front and rear?

    - im hoping its 296 front, and 294 non drive 292 drive on the rear (as I have loads of these from shimano tiagra/open pro wheels building)

    thanks if you do!

Yes that is correct if 32h and laced 3X.

I have a set of these and they are perfect all round wheels. strong, durable, good looking and comfortable. They are not the fastest wheels I own, but I ride on these around 300 days of the year as they are on my winter trainer/ commuter bike. I broke a spoke and due to the high spoke count I didn't notice till I cleaned it and noticed the wheel was slightly out of true. replacement spokes are cheap and can be picked up anywhere unlike a lot of factory wheels. Bearings are cheap and easy to come by and choice of replacement rims is huge.

The only downside is they don't seem to roll all that fast due to high seal drag. But I guess this is why the bearings didn't need replacing until around 8000 miles (only one bearing had worn but it made sense to replace all at same time).

The Pro III's aren't as loud as the Pro II's :(

There's nothing better when coasting behind a club mate who's battling into a headwind and all he can hear is the ticking of the Hope freehub.

I used Hope hubs on my mountain bike way back when and loved there loudness. Imagine my disappointment when meeting up with a colleague who has the Pro II's and was blown away by how loud they are compared to my Pro III's :(:(

He's since bought a new pair of Pro III's on OP's for his good bike and agrees that they are much quieter.

    I feel robbed.

That's about right. I have Excellights on Hope pro 3s, 32 spoke front andrear, double butted though.
