If you had cleats you would normally clip in but if you move your foot slightly off centre they are still quite secure without clipping in. I don't see why you would want to though, if you have cleats then use them. They are fine with trainers etc due to the large platform.
I don`t want to I was just wondering what their benefit was, i`m a recent convert from touring pedals to spd-sl ultegras and loving it and sorry I didn`t get them sooner and I would recommend them to the op wholeheartedly.
    Smarter than the average bear.

The benefit is that you can use them safely and comfortabl in ordinary shoes. If you want to go to the shops or have just a short ride to work they are good. And you have the advantages of clipless pedals with cleated shoes for more serious riding. It is about versatility and what type of riding you do. I only ride for competition and pleasure and would not consider these for myself.

"Proper" Road pedal are absolutely awful, I wouldn't use them. They are just a great marketing scam imo. SPD's are superior in every way .

Absolutely. Unless I was actually racing I would use nothing else. Considerably more practical for everyday cycling/training and you're not crippled the moment you get off the bike. We did 60 miles today and everyone in the group had SPD pedals.

Old cyclists never die; they just fit smaller chainrings ... and pedal faster
  • i use spds and i must admit ive unclipped a couple of times while climbing
  • I bought my first pair of spd sl's this morning I found there to be a noticeable differance the pedaling feels so much smoother, no altering the pedals every rotation. Fallen off twice already when coming to a stop, laughed my head off the first time.

Loving every minute of it though, glad i bought them

  • Well, I've not gone for the pedals yet, but I bought a pair of these cycling shoes today which are SPD compatible:

I've just tried them out for a short ride with my flat touring pedals and the stiffer soles make quite a noticeable difference even with these pedals as I can feel myself getting more power through the pedals than I could with my trainers.
