Specialized lock on grips allen bolt rounded.

Hi there.
I have managed to round the head of the allen bolt(2.5mm allen key) on one of my grips. I am scared to touch the other one. The bolts are really soft and rounded far too easily. I want to change the handlebars on my new bike so some advice would be greatly appreciated.
Firstly, how to remove offending bolt and then can I get replacement bolts from anywhere?
Thanks for taking the time to look at my question.
Cheers, Jim.

take an electric drill and suitable drill bit to them, after clamping your bike in a workstand, or laying it on the floor and having a friend sit on the bike so it won't move
make sure you wear some eye protection, and drill the bolt head off, at that point the clamp will lose torque and release the grip from your bars, you should be able to remove the remaining part of the bolt using needle nose pliers, for replacement bolts try a nut and bolt supplier (take the grip / clamp in with you)
in the future, always use the best quality allen key (Park AWS-10 multi tool for example), make sure you use the allen key square into the bolt head - don't use a ball-end allen key, and put some chain lube or light oil on the bolt before inserting into the clamp and tightening
this also applies to ODI Lock-on grips or other "clone" grips using allen key bolts to secure a locking collarCall 01372 476 969 for more information on UK\'s leading freeride park - Esher Shore www.eshershore.com0 -
Thanks for the reply esher shore. I wonder if anyone else has had this problem. I dont have a new handlebar yet so wont be drilling it out until I do. I want to go from straight to low rise. I will contact my lbs tommorrow as I think that the bolt was almost gone before I even touched it(honestly
). At least the bolt is tight and I can still use my bike!

Yes the bolts supplied with my Spesh lock-on grips were crap. I replaced them for some standard slot-head stainless machine screws - fairly sure they were M3 size and probably 20mm long. But it's still incredibly difficult to do them up tight enough without damaging the screwhead somwhat.0

Thanks for that tjwood.
I will try that for sure. I looked at screw-fix and they have m3 machine screws with phillips head so might try them. It looks like they are 12mm long on the bike.
Anyone else been stung by these crappy bolts?

Mine are nearly dead.
I prefer standard grips anyway.0 -
Yup, the ones on my stumpy were crap, really soft like you say, Id swear they were aluminium they were so soft. Replaced with s/s0

Thanks supersonic and J55TTC.Seems to be a fairly common problem.
J55TTC, what size screws did you use and where did you get them from.
