I have lots of play under braking and now under turning, I'm guessing that the forks stuffed, anyway have decided its time to get a new fork but need the bike this weekend, I have wrapped old inner tube around it to dampen the play, will this do the job or does anyone have any other recomendations, this is just a temporary fix btw.

do you like your face?
where is the play?
how do you think an inner tube might help?"Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

i've wrapped it round the topto stop the play it seems to be doing the job, I wont be going at speed this weekend, just going to be used for the skyride and then scrapped, get a new fork. but need a quick fix, I think the seals worn out which is why there is play I'm hoping the old tube will do the job.0

the play is between the lower stanchion and the tube so I've place the tube just under the top of the stanchion to stop movement.0
-
weight, where?
is the play between the two slidey bits of the fork, or between the frame and the fork?0 -
slidey bits, if it was between the frame and fork I would be very worried and would not be considering riding it.0
-
Actually, the stanchions and slider are probably more dangerous. If it were between the frame and the fork, chances are it would be your headset, but at heast the forks would be unlikely of faling out of th eframe.
But, with play in he fork bushes, it coulld potentially come apart.0 -

What for is it?0

suntour xcm, Having asked around it appears to be the seal, I can't find it anywhere to buy, so the plan was to use the tubing to pack out the space where the seal has worn away, and then to bin the fork next week (I only intend on riding it for the skyride as I have no other bike otherwise, so its going to be a careful ride not using front brake,) another thing i've thought of is may be the fork can be welded? the rest of the fork appears to be sound, the bolts are on tight as well.0
-
The fork is pretty much dead - the bushings have gone, and cost of replacments and tools to do it will be the same cost as what the fork is worth. The seals do not act as a bearings in the sense you think.
My advice - bin it, and get a new one!0 -
I am binning it, its just needed for sunday, I'm not looking to have a long term solution of bodging it, I wouldn't feel comfortable riding it like that. I'm looking at replacing it with an xcr, I don't want to spend much on it just want lock out and have no real money otherwise I would be looking at rockshox, however on a bike thats 3 1/2 years old its not worth it, and just gets used for commuting. And there's not really the time to order 1 and get it fitted, looking at at least a week for the order and then getting it fitted.0

No lockout - but adjustable rebound damping which I feel is more important on a budget fork.

i do most of my mileage on roads so wouldn't lock out be better?0
-
Well, I suppose - I was looking at the more offroad aspects.
Would a rigid fork be an option then?0 -
It has crossed my mind,i'm not really sure about it though, as I do enjoy going off road and I don't want to loose that, so unless a rigid fork with disc mounts is really cheap then.0
-
What budget do you have?0
-
not sure yet, i'm not at work atm, so as little as possible.0
-
You're still actually going to ride it?
For those about to die, we salute you. :shock:0 -
that 302 is tempting, how easy would it be to fit, I have a threadless headset, I would think about it going to lbs, how much would that cost. are the 2007 models still being made or is that 2-3 years old.0
-
The cheap 302 from CRC is out of stock.0
-
how are the 2006/2008 (cant remember which one) xcr's?what else can i get for around the same price but a little better?0
-
Depends on model of XCR.0
-
with lock out and hydraulic dampening0
-
All much the same really. The later ones have lighter uppers IIRC and maybe better lowers.0
-
ok thanks, are they a reasonable fork or should I be looking at something else I was quoted £60, so I am tempted as it'll put me on the road again, and if it lasts as long as the xcm then about 3 1/2 years.0
-
You wont get any better really for £600
-
fair enough not looking at spending too much atm. I want a new bike.0
