I decided to take the spring out of my Toras in preparation for ordering the new spring. So I took the preload adjust knob off with an allen key, used a magnet to remove the ballbearings and springs, then screwed off the fork upper to expose the spring. This is where I have gotten stuck as the spring refuses to come out of the tube.

Am I not pulling hard enough? or does the 2010 have something in the fork lowers stopping it from being pulled out? maybe similar to U-turn? (they are not U-Turn forks)

Any advice is very welcome :D except taking it to a shop (I am very poor at the moment :( )

Thanks guys.

Right, got round to phoning TFTuned to ask for a little advice and he looked into the new 2010 springs. Turns out that they aren't available for a few months and when they are they will be £50 (that's almost half the price of the whole forks!)

Looks like buying a 2010 Rockshox fork is the biggest mistake I have made in my time biking...
  • buying spung forks cheaply is most often a false economy if you need a new spring. Purchasing them direct from tftuned is cool because they will put the right spring in for you at point of sale.

You need to undo the bolt at the bottom - about 5 mm worth then give it a tap with a soft hammer to release it, then undo bolt completely and it should pull out - take a look on the TF tuned website - instructions are on there.

Depending on what you want, the Toras are pretty decent forks for the money and you can probably flog the old one on the classifieds.
  • If they're not u-turns then they shouldn't need the bottom bolt undone. Similarly there shouldn't be any ball bearings under the pre-load adjuster :?

Yes, it does sound like a Uturn fork!

    Any pics of the topcap?

This is true for pre-2010 forks, they have changed it all now. The knob clearly has "Preload -> +" written on it, and the man at TFTuned confirmed that they have changed all of the springs and that he won't be stocking them if they sell at £50.

I will see about getting pictures up tomorrow, I would definatly advise against 2010 Toras (coil sprung not air) due to this if you are a heavier rider.

Must be a way of retro fitting old springs and top caps.

I am game for trying to find out how. So has anyone tried to fit a standard spring onto the U-Turn fittings? If so I think this would be possible.

I did the other way round not 2 days ago as my other half had a trek with 120mm fixed travel forks with the stock red spring which were far too hard for her weight. My LBS tried to source the soft fixed travel spring from Fisher but 5 weeks later and a complete U-turn assembly turned up and I was only charged for the spring.

They are an inexpensive fork, so I assume the stanchions and lowers are the same with the difference being the spring, push-rod and top caps. I had no problems switchin 120 mm fixed travel to 130-85 mm U-turn, so I cannot see the issues doing it the other way around other than cost. You will need a new spring, a new top cap, and new push rod as well as the right size all-travel adapter according to the travel you want - so not cheap unless your LBS can do you a deal.

Come to think of it, I do now have all of the above with stock red spring in my shed with all of 1 hours riding on them. You might be able to get a blue spring for 120 mm fixed travel from TF tuned for about 20 quid... PM me if you're interested
