How do i tighten this brake?

I have recently been gifted a bike that has 'magura julie' brakes (look just like these http://www.cambriabike.com/Images/produ ... ake_oe.jpg)

They are abit slack so does anyone know how to actually tighten them?

Also what is the lifecycle of these brakes - e.g. how often do the pads need replacing?

what do you mean by tighten?

pads replace when worn out.

When i squeeze the lever it has to come quite far in before the brake applies?

try adjusting the lever reach screw. and check the condition of the pads.

oh the inner piston is adjustable but "fixed" so might need adjusting.

If it is the year that i think it is.
