SRAM -> (Old) Shimano compatibility?

Hi I was wondering whether or not the SRAM Attack 9sp shifters (both front and rear) would be compatible with an older shimano setup?

My front derailleur is a Shimano C050 mech - http://www.wiggle.co.uk/p/cycle/7/Shima ... 4733/#more

Also can anyone please suggest a semi-decent 9 speed rear derailleur? Bike's getting an overhaul however money's an issue so nothing too pricey would be great! I'm currently using a Shimano Acera on a 7-speed casette so I'm assuming I'd need a new derailleur?

Jeez I only wanted new wheels now I'm buying a whole new bike!!

Many thanks!

    9 speed shifters do not work with 7 speed cassettes. You must match the shifters to the cassette.
  • Sorry didn't clarify that; I know - my new hubs wont take 7-speed so I'm having to buy a 9-speed casette, but I don't know if my old derailleur will work for 9-speed?

    Thanks

    Edit; I bought a 7-speed spacer however it turns out the old (screw-on??) casette isn't compatible with the XT hubs :(

    Ah, you have a freewheel, not a cassette ;-)

    The derailers will work with 9 speed, but probably a good idea to upgrade them anyway. Some old derailers may not work with the largest rear cog ie if it is 34 teeth.

    Forgive me :lol: I'm out of my depth here, basically now I'm stuck with some nice shiney new wheels and no gears to go on them!!

    So I'm having to bin the old (freewheel?) gears, and considering buying this new set? http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Mode ... elID=20677

    That being an XT model I'm going to assume it'll fit with my new hubs? Then of course comes the derailleur and new shifters to go with it all... This is turning out to be quite an expensive replacement!!! :shock:

    Edit: I realise I could just buy a 7-speed casette however I'll be upgrading the brakes to hydros so the (previously integrated brake&shifter) setup will have to all be replaced anyway

    any shimano cassette will do. 9spd to match the Attact shifters (and 9spd chain)

    yes your mech should work but i would change it as well due to the issue mentioned above.
