Front gearing problem with my Boardman MTB/HT Pro

Hi,
I hope my fellow bike enthusiasts can help me out here. I bought a boardman MTB/PRO (2009 model) a few months ago - and wanted to know what your experiences are with this bike.
For mine, there's often a problem with changing the gear in the front cog - shifting up from the middle ring to the large one. Sometimes there will be 4 to 5 noisy clunks as the chain is trying to move from the middle cog onto the large cog; sometimes it goes in quicker; and now and again, it doesn't move off the middle cog at all.
Also, the left lever that changes the front gears - it's quite a snappy and instant action when changing through all gears - except for when changing from the middle cog to the large one, as described above; in this case, it's necessary to push the lever all the way down (a good inch) and hold it there until the chain has moved onto the large cog, then release - is this normal?
Halfords deny there's a problem with any of the above. Do you think there's a problem - I Would appreciate some feedback. Thanks.

has the bike had a service, cables stretch over time, this is what it sounds like, either lbs/halfords or you can do it, just tighten the cable up, and then a bit of fine tuning.0

Bought the bike 3 months ago and Halfords built it then gave it the safety check. No, I didn't know about the service.
I took it into Halfords last week after I noticed the problem. They tweaked it and improved it a little bit, but the problem still occurs, as in the description.
The description I've given is after they've tweaked it - that is, after their "improvement". Halfords say that's as good as it gets.0 -

I would say the travel is normal, thats about the same as mine and i dont have any problems. As already mentioned try adjusting it again or take it to another bike shop and see what they can do.Boardman Team 09 HT

The lever can take a 'good push and hold' but seems like it might need more cable tension.
The bike has adjusters - my advice is learn how to use them ;-)
We have a range of wrokshop articles and FAQ on gearing, and visit Park Tools website for adjustment advice.0 -
Shifters, mechs and cables are the main areas for a Mountain Bike owner that will need attention. Cables stretch and need regular cleaning and lubrication. I would suggest that you have a look at the Park Tools web site to try and gain an understanding of how to set up, fine tune and maintain these components.
Have you every cleaned or lubed the cable? Is the front mech properly aligned? From the symptoms you describe it should be fairly simple to sort and I would suggest that you try another bike shop if you or Halfords can't sort it.0
