V-Brake to Hydro Disc conversion? Which adapter? Please Help

Hi all, I'm new here so please bare with me.
I was given a hardtail a few months ago (Marin Bolinas Ridge), I think it's perhaps 2002 or earlier model - after about 4 months heavy use I managed to shear the rear axle, replacing it didn't seem to fix wheel wobble etc so I opted to buy a set of new wheels, so I've bought a pair of Mavic XM719s on Shimano XT disc hubs (decided I may as well upgrade to hydraulic discs).
However I've run into a potential show-stopper
Fitting the wheels today I'd assumed the frame would take discs as there was a pair of holes (unused) near the dropouts, so I thought they were for a disc caliper, however the gap between them looks much smaller than the 51mm IS or Post Mount fittings, it's more like 25mm - Here's a pic:
So my question is
1 - What are these holes for?
2 - Will I be able to fit a disc caliper? What adapter would I need?
Many thanks!!

They are eyelets for racks and mudguards.
An A2Z adaptor may fit that flat fopout.0 -
as covered in the FAQs"Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

I've had a look there but I'm a complete numpty & can't for the life of me work out which one I should be using, is it this one you mean?
I can see how the QR fits into the adapter but how would it screw into place? The holes seem out of line with the ones on my frame :?0 -

Thank you very much guys, really appreciate the quick replies!
Had a closer look and yup, makes sense to me so I've ordered one from Winstanleys, again thanks!0 -
What does it take to get your wheel out when this A2Z adapter is used? What's the hassle?0

You have to completely remove the QR squewer, otherwise it's exacltly the same."Internet Forums - an amazing world where outright falsehoods become cyber-facts with a few witty key taps and a carefully placed emoticon."0

Ok, that's a relief. It's a pittty they never show the back of the adapter in any of the photos or adds.0
