Helmet mirror

While I was out enjoying today's unbelievably good weather today I saw a guy who had a mirror helmet. It seems like a useful accessory, and my skin is thick enough to put up with the abuse :D

There appear to be several options. There's the ubiquitous (well, by mirror helmet standards :)) Blackburn one. People sometimes complain about the difficulty of fitting this correctly, however, and about how long the stickers last.

Then there's this rare and not-so-easy-to-get Yankee product, the Take A Look mirror, which may also be attached to glasses:

And finally there's the Reflex Flexible Helmet Mirror, the most expensive one, for which I can't seem to find any info on how it's actually attached to the helmet.

Does anyone here have any experience with these? Which one would be best? Should I also consider the ones that attach to glasses? (I don't use glasses at the mo, and am not sure I want to.)

Comments

  • I feel that the 'Take a look mirror' would constantly cause my sunglasses to slide down my nose, which would irritate me! I recon the helmet options would be better.

Your skin must be very thick btw!

Sorry but the ones that attach to the helmet look stupid under any circumstances

You wear a helmet because you think it will protect your head when you fall off, right?

Then you put a piece of glass on a stick in a position where it will smash into your face on impact. Noooooooooooooooo thanks, squire.

This idea is wrong on a weapons grade scale. No No No No No NO IMHO.
  • Be warned with helmet mirrors. Re-focusing your vision on some of them can be worse then just turning your head. It depends on what shape the mirror is and it's quality. Also, if you ride near bushes and trees it may knock it into your face.

If you do a google search you can get mirrored bar end plugs.

The Viewpoint Mirror in the glasses only takes a while to get used to. I have one in my dark tinted lens and when I have my yellow tint or clear cycling glasses on I certainly notice its absence. It works like a blind spot mirror on a car.

I saw someone with a bar-end-plug mirror in a fast-ish bunch in recent sportive event. The only problem might be that it the angle of the mirror is fixed (this one looked to be fixed at about 45 degrees) the only way to adjust it would be to alter the angle of your bars... But if you plug it in and the angle is right straight off, it would be ideal. I got the impression that this guy was using it to keep an eye on people 2 or 3 feet behind him in the bunch rather than cars 10 or 20 meters behind.

I think i'd only consider a helmet mirror if i'd previously been attacked from behind when using a urinal.

    Door this way is it?
  • 90% of riding is to do with looking cool and the mirror helmet most certianly is not a cool look, turn your head - it works for me.

Saw a pic of one once that mounts at the top of the down tube - you glance down to see it and look between your legs. No idea what it's called or anything else about it though.

Yeah, between this and a few other forums I read, I've seen quite a few people recommending a bar end mirror. I was assuming that they would be adjustable, but must admit I haven't googled them yet

This, I've found out, is called the Bike-Eye -- for info see http://www.bike-eye.com/index.html. Quite a few people appear to like it.

I've got two mirrors (not on the one bike though!). One is a bar-end (plugs into the end of my straight bars) and the other attaches to the hoods on my drop bars. You can also get a mirror that attaches to the bar ends of drop bars but I have bar end shifters so haven't tried that one.

Both of mine are Blackburns. They are adjustable and quite frankly, super! The only problem with the one that attaches to the hooda is that it slightly gets in the way when braking but I also have short fingers so perhaps that's just me!
