Chain jamming between middle ring and bottom of frame????

I went for a ride on the weekend (W2) up at Afan. Bike was fine most of the way then after going through the really muddy section on the way between the wall and whites the chain started to occasionally jam between the middle front ring and the frame!!
This happen several times, always on up hill sections.
I guess several factors could contribute to the cause but has anyone else experienced this sort of thing?
Factors i'm thinking may have caused it include:
Chain to long - Shouldn't be as the its the origional set up
Kink in the chain - Checked it looks ok
Damaged middle ring - Checked it looks ok
Mud and crud on chain - For sure!
Chain not oiled enough - Have just bought 'finish line' stuff - was using 3 in 1 oil :?

welcome to chainsuck.
if it started half way through a muddy ride and there's no visible damage (or shark's tooth wear) to the middle ring once you've cleaned it up then I would guess it was the muck that was causing it
if the ride is really messy, sometimes I'll clean my chain (and pads) with water from my c-back mid ride then reapply lube. I find this helps but is only really necessary in very muddy conditions (and I know Afan can fall squarely into that category!)
another thing that can happen (did to me but to the granny ring) is where there's no shark's tooth wear to the teeth but once you clean the ring really well, you find that the metal in the trough of the leading edge has "thickened". Once this gets to a particular level, the thickened section (perhaps with the helping hand of some mud) can "grab" the chain and pull it round the chainring. I solved this on my bike with a SS granny ring. I've not experienced that sort of wear on a middle ring, but I suppose it's possible.Everything in moderation ... except beer

If riding an XC race bike is like touching the trail,
then riding a rigid singlespeed is like licking it
... or being punched by it, depending on the day0 -
It is important to properly decontaminate your bike of chain suck JuJu immediately. Do not store your bike near any other bikes, or bike components untill a full treatment course has been followed.
All drive train components (Purists believe this includes both mechs but modern chainsuckologists believe this may have no effect.) must be removed, doused in petrol, and burned. They must then be buried in a pit which has been pretreated with GT85, and the grave marked with that-adjustable-wrench-you-chewed-the-jaws-up-on and a rounded off 5mm allen key.
Really though, check your chain for wear, check your ring/s for wear (ooh-er). Also check your chainstay for damage, it's possible to chew off quite big chunks this way. My preference would be replace the chain first, possibly the ring as well. It's one of those annoying problems that seem to just crop up now and then.
[edit to include] I wouldn't have thought chain length would have anything to do with it.
Do crud still make the chain suck plate? A quick google makes it look like Tektro and Ringle do them. Good luck buddy.0 -
Was out the saddle and climbing hard when my chain sucked up and locked up. pinging me over the bars because i was still trying to pedal for a split second. Damaged paint on chain stay and snapped the two top gears of the rear cassette. My drivetrain was up for renewal anyway so i changed the lot.0

BIke is only a few months old SRAM mechs and truvita crank set, not sure on the chain.
Had a good look last night no obvious signs of wear or damage on the middle ring. Did find a few semi, mildly stiff ;-) links in the chain so sorted them just incase. plenty of lube added now.
Will check out the anti chain suck devices though.
Would hate it to happen in the Brecon Beast next weekend!!!!0
