Race blades v Crud Roadracer guards v Chromoplastics

So what do you think?
I already have a set of Raceblades at home, and to be honest I haven't been too impressed - mainly because I can't get them to sit right so they end up lopsided or rubbing on the tyre.
I also have a set of chromoplastics, which should have done the job. But me thinking it was a 10 minute job when I was pushed for time and had to go out = unfinished job. Next time I went into the garage to fit them a couple of the little bolts/fittings had gone walkies, so never fitted them properly
I'm just wondering whether the Crud Roadracer are better than Race blades, and easier to get on and off than chromoplastics? Any thoughts would be useful.

It's such early days with the Roadracers yet really, don't know of anyone who has fitted them and tried to remove them. The good thing about this new crud product is that the rule has been broken.
You don't have to have clearance and mudguard eyes to use full length mudguards. This can only be a good thing.0 -
My LBS is stocking the Cruds this week. Defo going to check them out this weekend, and likely buy a set!0
-
Ah, didn't realise they were so new.
So no one can really give any feedback on them. I may get a set then at least I've got choice. If they're not upto much they can always be used on the OH's or Jnr's bikes.0 -
Go read the 9-page thread about the Crud Raceguards, lots of feedback there as well as comments and gerat service from Mr Crud. Use the 'Search' button, why hot?
Current opinions seems to be Raceguards are Jesus, iPhone, sliced bread mudguards (insert your own superlative mataphor as appropriate)...Litespeed Tuscany, Hope/Open Pro, Ultegra, pulling an Extrawheel trailer, often as not.
FCR 4 (I think?)

They will still not be as good as proper full mudgurds though. If they will fit your bike, get full guards.I have only two things to say to that; Bo***cks0

Thanks, found the 9 page thread, don't go on commuting often hence not finding it sooner.0

hammerite whats your bike? i have a pair of race blades and they have been great, ive only put them on for really wet charity/sportive rides. my bike is a specialized allez sport 08 and havn't had any lopsided rubbing tyre problems. Any problems i had with fitting the race blades its been down to my fault.0
-
I put them on a Trek Pilot, to be honest it's probably been down to me. But I've been on rides where I've clipped the race blade with my toe and ended up with it rubbing for the rest of the ride and even after stopping to try and adjust I've not got it right.
I did one extremely wet ride last year (light rain, but lots of standing water) and the front offered hardly any protection, I was soaked within minutes.0 -
I'd probably go with the new Crud. It's so flexible, and i like how it's ability to deform has been designed into the product.
The Raceblades look the best and have a variety of colours, but for me I think i'll be on Cyclelife (who are the only place i can find with any stock!!) and getting me a pair.0 -

Agreed - it's a none-starter to compare either race blades or crud road racers to proper full length cromoplastic guards. If you have the eyelets and clearance, and you want mudguards, for God's sake get some proper ones.
Think of the crud ones as an improvement on the race blade idea - they give a bit of extra coverage to the brake callipers (left gaping with race blades and those cheeky giant defy guards) but still don't cover as much of the wheel as a full length guard (especially if you look at the bit on the rear wheel down the back of the seat tube.
So, if you're thinking about race blades because you can't fit full length guards, then by all means take a close look at the Cruds - but if you can fit full length, why on earth are you even considering the cruds?Cannondale Synapse 105, Giant Defy 3, Giant Omnium, Giant Trance X2, EMC R1.0, Ridgeback Platinum, On One Il Pompino...0 -

I thought the stays were designed to shatter if the guard started to deform? e.g. twig caught in the guard?Cannondale Synapse 105, Giant Defy 3, Giant Omnium, Giant Trance X2, EMC R1.0, Ridgeback Platinum, On One Il Pompino...0 -
The stays are designed to shatter, the guard itself seems very flexy (but tough). I'd agree they don't provide as much coverage as full guards (at the rear anyway, the front seems to provide full coverage). If you cycle in the wet in a group then I agree they could do with being longer but if the OP isn't then they provide all the coverage you need. They are much easier to get set up correctly than race blades and I regularly had to keep re-aligning my race blades but haven't so far on the race guards (although only done about 75 miles on them so far).0

On the winter bike I can get full guards on. I'll just have to see if I can get the bolts for the chromoplastics from somewhere. I have no idea where they went, I left them on a chair in the garage and when I went back the next day a couple had disappeared!
Even a full tidy out of the garage didn't unearth them.0 -
Hammerite - I'm pretty certain SKS do bolt packages as a seperate item - shouldn't be too hard to track down!

Fark! Nearly £8 apparently!!!
Or SJS do individual bolts for £1 each - could be cheaper depending on how many you've lost!?

I'm fully aware the stays are designed to shatter, but the flexibilty of the product is the real benefit right? If the stays shatter and the guard rubs on the wheel it looks fairly simply to pull the guard away or bend it clear.
Raceblades are so rigid that they'd probably slice your hand up!0 -
Ah, see where you're coming from?
Could it not then, possibly, flop onto the tyre and get carried up to the fork crown as the stays shatter, and get caught there - given it's so flexible?

it could move, I haven't got any either so i'm not an expert but the vid on Crud's youtube page seems to show it being attached by a cable tie somewhere?
Crud don't usually bring out shoddy products so it should be good. Gonne get down my local Raleigh shop tomorrow and get a pair i think.0 -

I doubt it. As Tall Rubber Duck says they are attached to the brake bolt that goes into the frame so that stops it getting twisted far enough to do any damage and all it will do is flop about on top of the wheel. Annoying but it won't stop you getting home and if you have a bag just undo the quick release cable tie and stick it in your bag.
Haven't had chance to try them yet as the rain went away almost as soon as I got mine. Said I wouldn't take them off again however they are so easy to put on and take off that I actually have them off again. Next week looks like there could be some showers so will put them on again after the weekend.0 -

Thanks for that, I'm only missing two I think so will probably by a couple of individuals instead of the pack.0 -

I just bought a '10 Giant Defy 3, which mudguards to you recommend for it?

I have the Blumels rather than the Chromoplastics but the nuts are the same (I had both and like the Blumels more when side by side). You can get a pack of 4 nuts of the exact size down your local B&Q for just over a quid...or loads for £2.50, or you could about 2 months back when I fitted mine.
I can also recommend some light action Loctite on them, or you may find a few months in you will be minus a few unless you tighten them religiously on a regular basis.0 -
I fitted some CRUD Roadracers at the weekend to my bike, easy to fit and work well.... but these are my first mudguards though so I have nothing to compare against but im happyCycling never gets any easier, you just go faster - Greg LeMond0
