Those of you from the Scottish Noob Audax thread, will know this already, but Satan's Budgie and I have put together a little unofficial audax event - the Fife Flurry on 11 October. All ages and abilities welcome. It's not a formal event - don't expect marshalls, goodie bags or paparazzi - just an opportunity for like minded riders north of the border to meet up and push some pedals.

Full details on the Fife Flurry website.

    Hi,

I like the idea but can't commit.

Do I sign up and be a no-show?

Or do I just show up unannounced?
None of the above should be taken seriously, and certainly not personally.

Put yourself down as a maybe and let TMW know nearer the time? It doesn't cost anything, so ther's nothing to lose.

Has anyone done a headcount from the various forums / threads? There must be a few by now.

I've just done a quick calculation: Assuming a 10am start and it gets dark at 6pm gives us a minimum speed of 12.5 kph (not including stops for cake, punc**res etc.) for completion in daylight.

  • Met check is showing +9 deg, Wind 14 mph for the south no rain.
Given the wind factor dress for +7 deg with a wind proof for the latter half as the roads are over high ground.
  • Route information can now be found at http://www.andysutton.co.uk/ff/index_ff.html
Your comments or advice is most welcome

That's great info, thanks so much for all the effort. Definately has the class to be an official audax next year!

What time do you expect to meet at the cafe at the finish? I'm only averaging 10+ mph on the rolling Fife hills at the moment. Don't know why Edin to St Andrew's felt so easy? I've been exploring new routes and had to walk on one hill! The last two weekends I've really struggled and only managed 30-33miles. I might have to take a short-cut to get to the cafe before you all leave :D .

In preparation though I've bought a nifty map holder for the handlebar (no pegs and plastic bags for me  ), and an extra bar thingy as there was no room left for the lights. Looks like the cockpit of a plane now :D .

    You have a PM
  • Quick general question to those who are watchibng this tread but are bit hesitant to join us?

Would you be interested in a mini Fife Flurry (The MacFlurry) of about 45 miles. In simple terms Cupar, direct to the first coffee stop in St Andrews (about 10 miles). Join the group for the top loop Guardbridge>Leuchars>Tayport>St Michaels>Leuchars>Guardbrige.

Jump off route back to Cupar to save us some seats in the coffee shop. About 45 in total.

Just one Yes and I will have the route sheet ready for Sunday.

    Sorry guys.

I work away from home during the week and go out on a Saturday morning.
Going out all day on a Sunday is pushing it.
According to the wife, I have to spend -some- time at home

Hi all - hope it all goes well and have a grand day out.

BTW, you've picked the same meeting place and time (10:00, Cupar Tesco) as we racers from the local cycling clubs (Fife Cycling 2000, Leslie Bikes, Spokes etc..) use for the regular Sunday morning training ride, so make sure you join the correct group or you might get a surprise :D

You mean blown out of the back by the time you pass railway station :D

Should be easy to spot amongst the bling, club colours and go faster wheels.

Would love to have a go at this, but I think 60+ miles would be pushing it, I've done nothing longer than a 20 miler since Edi - St. A's  :(

Just bought a lighter bike too, it's crying out for a decent run, but I'm too weak

Could knock up a route of about 45 miles based on the Flurry route see back a bit on this thread.

Yeah I noticed that bit, but I presume it'd be a bit of a logistical pain in the butt due to not being a circuitous route, as I'd have to drive up with my bike. Unless I'm being thick

  • You could always come up on the train? Station is right next to the start point.

As to a making up an adjusted route, not really a problem as I ride the roads almost on a daily basis. Start with everyone, nip off gentle run to the cafe stop in St A's, rejoin do the top loop and nip off route before the lumpy bit. over Strathkennis.

That's good news: I've been meaning to say hello to you lot for several years now, but I'm usually on driving duty for my son's football team (we also meet at Cupar Tescos on a Sunday morning!).

What's the usual pace and distance for your rides? I could do with a challenge.

That sounds like a great compromise if it's not too much trouble Satan's Budgie. I'd love to do a MacFlurry :D .

I actually went over Strathkinness at the weekend and passed out on the bench on High Road!! Wonder why it's called that  . Only got back on the bike because I was starting to shivver :D . Was supposed to go to St Andrew's then and back to Cupar but missed out going to St Andrew's and headed straight back to Cupar. So know I'd be useless having to do that hill again after 50+ miles  .

I will put together a MacFlurry route, which will be an addendum to the route published. Please make sure that you let me know at the start and I will give you both sheets.

If I can get it on to the web site in advance I will let you know.

Anyone know what the parking's like in Cupar? Are Tesco happy to let you leave your car in their carpark all day?

  • Yes, no problems. Would suggest that you use the area at the bottom of the car park away from the main shop doors. Please park close to South Road in the area between the petrol station and the old garage.

As you come off South Road keep left and park on your left.

All will become clear when you arrive..
  • The MacFlurry route (40 miles) can be found at http://www.andysutton.co.uk/ff/index_ff.html

Hey Tyax! What bike did you go for in the end? We've arranged a shorter route specifically for people who don't fancy the full distance. Full details on the Fife Flurry website.

We were only expecting a handful of people, so it's been great to see some new faces expressing an interest!
