Not dropping onto small front ring

Prior to having my bike "serviced", I could get any combination of gears. Now when on the big ring front and small ring rear, I can't drop down to little ring front. It will only drop when I have gone up afew rings at the rear.

The obvious answer is to take it back to the shop but they're to far away and I need it for tomorrow.

What do I need to alter to make things happen?

The gap between the outer plate and chain teeth is a few mill, the chain plate is in line with the chain. It rubs like crazy but because of the angle won't drop down.
Help

I think you are using your gears incorrectly. To even contemplate using the small chainring you should be on the largest few rear cogs anyway, or you just angle the chain, replicate gears and cause wear and rub.

Have a look in the FAQ on a guide t gear changing.
