It has suspension and 27 gears now though. Running 1x9 was fine until I hit my first MTB trail with technical climbs and my legs fell off. Used a bashguard and a homemade guide made from an old refelctor mount to keep the chain on. Worked flawlessly around FTD
*ponders how long it will be before I wish for a rigid 1x9 again*
I run 1x9 and ride all sorts of stuff, from DH runs, to playing around on jumps and 4X to short'ish XC loops (around 3-4 hours max).
Some uphills can be a bit more difficult, but standing and putting down some power usually does the job, and most of my local trails have no need of the granny cog.
You would probably need a chain guide though to keep the chain in check as it has a tendency to jump off if you're only running one front ring.
There is a review of an MRP x1 on the home page of Bikeradar - its a xc oriented device for 1x9 set ups but looks the right idea if you dont think you need a bash guard and what not.

Just interested in how other people are running 1x9 and what they think of it.
