after 2weeks in scotland, front wheel being dropped in and out many times to put it in the car the axle is getting a little dry. There seems to have been copper slip maybe on it before, but does it specifically need this or will ordinary grease do?
(Not talking about the thread by the way the surface of the axle itself)

thanks in advance

    grease is better than nothing.

the bearing inner race just sits on the axle so it does not need "greasing" but it needs something to stop the bearing races getting "stuck" on the axle.
