Luggage costs

Hi iam looking at buying a cannondale rize 5 in america next year and was wondering how much would the excess luggage handlng cost? And what would be the best way to make sure the bike is safe(protection while flying)

it depends on the carrier. but add 14% import tax and VAT to the cost.

To the bike cost, you get stung for the extras upon your return to the UK with it!

again 14% import tax and then VAT on the cost of your bike.

the cost of bringing the bike on the plane depends on which carrier you use and what their terms are.

It's the stuff that means you have to go through the red route at customs and declare. 15% is the VAT - import duty is separate but not too much I think - less than 2% of the total.

No import duty is about 15% on complete bikes. and then there is the VAT which is currently 15% but what will it be when he travels? he says next year so it could be back up to 17.5 or maybe higher.

just checked and the HM Govt. site states 14% and 17.5% vat (they must have forgotten to update it).

Crikey O' Reilly. Didn't realise it was that bad! I do remember that for car imports, you were always advised to take the dollar price and take that as the price in pounds. Not sure if that works anymore - probably not.

It seems unlikely to be very viable unless maybe you can get some purchase tax back when buying in the US.

bike parts are a lot less import duty but if you have enough parts to make a bike they can and will charge the full bike rate.
