I've gone down the ghetto tubeless route with mixed success - when it works its great, but more often than not its a pain in the .....

so i'm looking to get a proper tubeless setup

My question is, if i get tubeless rims like the mavic 819's http://www.mavic.com/mtb/products/xm-819.323321.2.aspx can i run normal (non ust) tyres? If so will it be better than ghetto?

Its just that I have a garage full of tyres and i'm not sure i want to go down the road of having to be a whole new pile of UST tyres....

Well you can run normal tyres with tubes in as they are designed to be run, but really your asking can you just chuck a normal tyre on & run it tubeless in which case no you can't.
Feel free to try it but I'd expect the bead to fail at a inappropriate time with messy/dangerous results.

You can put the non ust tyre on & chuck some sealant in & maybe get it to seal but I doubt it, or you can use the ghetto/stans tape etc method to do the same as what you have done with your old rim.
Or you can get a tubeless ready tyre & again use sealant without a rim strip/cut tube, or you can just do the better idea of running a UST tyre on a UST rim as it's designed, then add or don't add sealant depending on your preference.
