Apologies if this has been asked before but a search didn't reveal much.

Are there any compatibility issues with using Campagnolo drop bar shifter/brake lever units with a Shimano drivetrain (assuming number of speeds match)?

Cheers

In short - yes.The Campag and Shimano have different 'throw' on the gears i.e. a 10 spd Shimano cassette and a 10 spd Campagnolo cassette are different widths so the levers move the rear gear different amounts. Consequently it shouldn't work.

However, I ran Campag levers and rear mech with a Shimano cassette for years with no real problems :)

    Depends ?
What exactly do you want to do ?
10 C will run 10 S with a S rear mech as there is only a couple of mill difference in the block size, so as long as you make gear 5 exact then 1 and 10 are only 1 mm out and will work OK.
10C will also run 8S directly and 9S if you hubub the S rear mech ( easier than it sounds ).

Have fun  check out Sheldon Brown.

8 or 9 speed won't work because there ends up being too much of a difference but with ten speed the cassettes are so close together it should shift fine but won't be very smooth.
And now you know, and knowing is half the battle

Campag 10 will work Shimano 8 and 9 as long as you use a shimano rear mech. I have an 8 speed set up and Paul Hewett markets a 9 speed version on his touring bikes and he would not put that set up on his bikes if it didn't work. Cycling + didn't even mention the set up when they tested it and I believe they would have done so if it didn't work.
