For me I use WD40 or anything like that, it does the job fine for cleaning the chain and I clean all the oil off the chain rings to make it look all brand new again, it's lovely when the bike is all nice and clean and running smooth again.

Are there some questions in there? Gunk is fine, not harsh for your bike. but perhaps unnecessarily stinky. The high temperature baked on deposits, which Gunk moves so well, don't feature on bicycles. I prefer Citrus degreasers because of some uneasy (and probably uninformed) sense that they may be less toxic to whichever creature is next in line. But anything sold as a degreaser works perfectly well as described, in my experience. Use detergent to clean it off, and then clean water to rinse.

    Baby wipes for everything! 8)

If the chain is totally minging, it might take about five to get it nice and clean again.

Warm water with a splash of stardrops does it every time for me. :) Then a rub down with a damp chamois, and for the bike!!! I use a piece of old towel...

I use car shampoo to wash the frame and wheels and Muck-Off for the chainring, chain and rear mech. Hose it all off after and re-lube. In between washes I use Tufenega Redbox wipes to clean it down. http://www.toolstop.co.uk/deb-tufanega-red-box-heavy-duty-workshop-wipes-tub-of-150-p4162
Thankfully I can buy them wholesale.
