Avid Elixir replacement hose

Hi,
I have put an Avid Elixir CR rear brake onto my bike but the hose is only just long enough, to the point where the handlebars are turned more than 90 degrees it puts a strain on the hose. Obviously this is ok short term, but I'm looking to replace the hose asap to prevent any possible crash damage...
Firstly, can anyone recommend any suitable replacement hoses as I am struggling to find Avid branded hoses anywhere?
Secondly, what will I need? I have the bleed kit already so refilling the system is not an issue. I'm thinking connectors, etc.
I'm not the most technically minded so please use basic english or link to special items, etc.
Thank you for the assistance!
James

hmmm, you might need to ask your lbs to phone up fisher and speak to someone there about it.0

Big_Benj - Will any hydraulic hose fit? Is it all standard sizing or does it differ between brands/systems? I get easily confused
ride_whenever - I take it Fisher is the UK distributor of Avid? I've already emailed Leisure Lakes bikes but that was earlier today so, unsurprisingly, no reply yet...0 -
I'm in exactly the same situation (well, apart from my hose is too long).
Trouble is, no-one does replacement fittings for Elixirs. In the end I've had to order a hose (with fittings) from an Avid dealer. You can buy just the fitting for £8 or so, but no-one seems to have them in stock.
I should say I needed a new hose anyway, because mine was kinked and had rub wear.
Fishers is the best place - e-mail the Avid "brand manager" - he was very helpful."it rubs the lotion on its skin, or else it gets the hose again"0 -
fivelittlefish - there's a hose shortening kit in the official Avid brake bleeding kit*. Cheapest I've seen it is £33 but it is a useful thing to have anyway. If you do get the bleed kit there's youtube videos on how to bleed the system - it's fairly easy.
(*I've just checked and it has the fittings for 2 hoses, although this is just for the end that attaches to the brake lever and the end connected to the calliper is left alone. I'd imagine it should be fine for you if not replacing the hose. I don't know whether you'd need some fittings for the calliper end if you do replace the hose or whether the exixting fittings can be taken out and put on the new hose?)
For anyone else's reference I've looked up Fisher and their web address is www.fisheroutdoor.co.uk
They have a Avid Elixir Hydraulic Line Kit 2000mm (the stock hose is 1.4m) so I'll email them and hopefully this will contain all the bits I need! I should hope so for £25!0 -
Yep - the fittings come with the bleed kit, but I needed a new hose as well, so ordered the same kit as you for £25... It's the banjo end that's the problem - the end that fits to the caliper."it rubs the lotion on its skin, or else it gets the hose again"0

Fibrax claim that their braided hydraulic hose can work with a bit of "modification" (their words, not mine!), but I'd prefer to wait for HEL or Goodridge to get their act together first.
I had to do the same as you and buy more standard Avid hose when I moved my brakes onto another frame.0 -
I've had a reply from Chris Brattle of Fisher Outdoor - here is is for reference in case anyone else has similar issues...
My email to him:
Hi - I have put my Avid Elixir CR rear brake on a Zesty 314 (large) andfound the brake hose just too short (it fits but turning the bars over90 degrees begins to exert force on the hose). I am therefore lookingfor a longer hose. I note that you stock (A15022B) Avid Elixir Hydraulic Line Kit 2000mm -can you confirm what is included in the kit and if it contains all theparts I need to replace the existing hose. I already own the Avid Bleedkit for refilling the system afterwards. In case it is important the current hose is stock and came with thebrake, purchased through www.merlincycles.co.uk. It measuresapproximately 1400mm.If the kit does contain all the necessary parts can I order it throughyourself or do I need to visit a local bike shop and get them to do it?Thank you for your help, James
His reply:
Dear Sir The Elixir hydraulic line kits come with all the fittings needed tochange the hose over and shorten it to fit. They can be ordered from any of the retailers listed on our website. Regards Chris
The kit ((A15022B) Avid Elixir Hydraulic Line Kit 2000mm ) is listed as £25 on their website.0 -
Sorry - just wanted to say thanks to everyone for your help too!0
