Cheers Ben, it's now sporting Reba Races and Mavic Cross rides with SLX cassette so it's a good 2 1/2lbs lighter than in that pick :D

i would agree with the altitude frame although Genesis didnt seem to have any when i tried to get one, thus my other suggestion is another +1 for the Dialled Prince Albert

I think sheeps I be tempted by the 456. Run at the 115 forks that you have, but maybe a smaller frame size than you think because of the long top tube - this will allow a nice long seatpost. You may need the biggest one anyway. Big 2.4 tyres, comfy saddle. Comfort is more than just the frame really.

+1 for the Handjob I have a 21" version that I might be selling the frame, wanting a smaller size or a Stiffee, or CRC have them new 21" £421 in matt black.

It will do almost anything i went to a secret jump area the other day and the thing just doesn't ever give up.

The new 2010 Genesis bikes will be hitting the shops next month and you shouldnt have any problem getting the Altitude 30 frame from your local dealer.

I'll throw in a vote for the Charge Duster.

Haven't ridden a great variety of frames but compared to my Giant XTC the Duster gives a much nicer ride with a much less stretched out racey geometry and response.

How about searching out a later Kona Explosif, probably wouldn't be new, but probably would be excellent! My hot certainly is, and my steel lave dome is good too.

I'll give another +1 for the Charge Duster, even though its being ignored

I test rode a Genesis Altitude but didn't get on with it, preferred the feel of the Duster so went for that. The Duster's head angle is quite steep but the way it rides places most of the rider weight over the rear end of the bike, making for muchos-manual fun!

I must confess to liking the OnOne 456 and the Cotic Soul too, so my advice is to get a test ride on as many as you can cos there's always much more too a bikes feel than the numbers alone... easier said then done though with most frame-only options

There is only one frame is worth getting and it's the best steel frame / price is the Genesis Altitude 30, it comes with Reynolds 853 tubing, beautiful frame and £350, Charge and On-One is too heavy.

guybe, from this and your other comments, can I ask you a direct question; do you work for or with Genesis?

how can you say its the only one worth getting? There are so many good steel frames, I can think of 10 i would quite like without even really trying.

Well I'll throw in another for the Cotic Soul. I love it.

Having come from a P7 I can say that the Soul feels like steel, a lovely, lively ride. In comparison the P7 felt dead.

meh, don't rate the genesis frames, bit lifeless underfoot. Not to mention somehow my inbred came in lighter than my mates genesis even though he had some stupid light parts on!

I'd really like to try the cotic's an evil, a handjob. Rode a lovely old p7 with steel rigids, it was nice and looked amazing, but needed some forks on the front.

It does look spanky-woo dressed in that flavour of green like that. I'm busy tracking down a place where i can demo / take a look at that pipedream sirius and i think I've dropped lucky with a place nearby.

I'm getting the vibe reading around there's a new sirius coming out using Reynolds 725 tubing and the price is going to be adjusted upwards to the 250 mark. But I'll verify that for myself tomorrow.

The Kona used to be available frame only - not sure if is discontinued, which would be a pity as is one of the all time great names in steel.

To answer your question, I dont work for Genesis, I have email James (very helpful chap who works for Genesis) a couple times this year, he always reply back with answers when I ask about sizes, frame weight, info, etc.

I agree with you at a point, there is a selection of steel frames that worth buying but I think the Altitude is the best on value with Reynolds 853 tubing.

Beside that, if you read Issue 97 July '09 'What Mountain Bike' mag, the bike experts picked 12 best bikes of 2009 to test the best 2009 bike and Altitude was picked for the test, there is no Charge, On-One, Rock Lobster or Cotic in the test, so surely that said something?

It's better everyone likes different brand rather than just one otherwise it would be boring, but it's worth trying a few that suited you best.

    Hope this helps.

Dunno it, but the reviews and comments really shine, it's a definite fave for some and looks like you'd squeeze up to 120 travel forks without it going on the wonk too much.

checked this out earlier, most people have sold out of the Green expolsif, but on Kona World there is a 2009 one in back, doesn't look as cool though. I can't find the 09 for sale, so i guess its not being marketed in the UK?!?!

There was a thread on STW and I gleaned most of the info off that, the £199 quoted price on that sirius web page seemed to be what peeps were paying in the thread. The bump up to 725 tubing and (alleged) subsequent price increase I've yet to verify. So I'll phone up that bicycle smithy distributor place mentioned on the pipedream site and see what's what.
