New convert since June, really enjoying myself, riding far more than I ever expected. When I started wasn't going to wear lycra, or get shoes and pedals. Now got the shirts and bib shorts, next purchase is definitely shoes and pedals, just interested in how much difference they make.

I think they make loads of difference, it's like night and day.
You wont be disappointed with them.
The hardest part is deciding which shoe/ pedal combo to go for, and that is all personal preference...

All the difference in the world. It's the most fundamental change you can make, it will make your life so much easier.

Yes - probably the biggest techincal improvement you can make.

Clipless pedals focus all your power through the pedal.

You can stomp out 100% of your power without worrying about your foot slipping off or wiggling around on the pedal.

You can pull on the pedal upstroke. Although you cannot generate huge amounts of power this way, you will improve your whole pedalling technique.
  • What make of clipless shoes would anyone recomend on a budget of say £70 to 80

A big change if you are using nothing, a smaller one if you are using cycle clips. I use SPDs and clips (for commuting). They are excellent and cheap and no faffing about. But SPDs are better for big deal events

Just went clipless with a decent pair of Spesh shoes, best move i've ever made.
Genuinely, It is like a fresh start to cycling.
Monday night, got up a pretty serious climb I try every so often and have never done without stopping, and yes, it was the first time on the new bike, but I put it down to the pedals and shoes

(although i was also pretty wound up from my first fall on clipless..... :? )
  • Hard to go wrong with Specialized shoes - you really need to try them from a shop first to make sure you get a good fit - order online if there's a big saving
