Another which bike to go for thread (£1000)

I am a total newbie and I have been looking through this site for advice on buying myself a new bike.
I want to commute the 10 or so miles to work but also do a bit of off roading at the weekend. Nothing that hardcore but that limits me to a hardtail with a lockout front fork I believe. Looking to spend around £1000
I have got it down to 2 bikes. Between the Specialised Rockhopper SL 2010 and the Scott Scale 50
I have seen alot of good reviews on the Specialised Rockhopper SL 09 expert but I have been looking at the 2010 version
I need some help decided which bike would be best or if anyone has any better ideas on what I should be going for, for around £1000

But maybe even a cross bike, depends what your definition of "a bit of off roading at the weekend" includes..0 -
