I'm well confused with chains

well, more specifically with singlespeed chains and half link chains..

What are they compatible on?
Is there such a thing as singlespeed chainrings and cogs (products such as gusset cogs say they only work with 9sp chains)?

what can you use half link chains on?
Do they work on 9sp?
do they work with singlespeed cog/chainset?

I'm reaaaaallly confused

single speeds are thicker chains, thats all I know :P

interesting question tho, I think I will be in need of a new chain soon so I am all ears as well :D

    Ben what have you got?

or is it a plan to by some thing?

if it is for gears in will work with SS stuff as well.

if it is SS only then no geared chains.

  • Well it depends... basically i'm looking at the Truvativ Noir XC SS chainset. In the "spec" page on truvativ website under compatible chains is says "N/A"... not exactly helpful

On the rear i'm not 100% yet... I'm *thinking* about a hope 2 SS specific hub, but i'm uncertain of what cogs are compatible, can you use the gusset cogs?
If so then they say to use a 9sp chain only.

The other way round of doing it is with a different chainset + single ring and then a normal hope 2 hub with a single cog (gusset) and SS converter kit. That way I can switch to gears if I really want... but I know I need a 9sp chain for that anyways (from what I learnt with the Surge anyways)...

well the find out what the crank needs.

most SS rear kit will run a geared or SS chain.

if it will run a geared chain it will run a SS chain. Not visa versa.
