Er, does the Giant XTC range share the same frames?

  • Hello Mate,

Yes, the XTC 1, 2, 3 and 4 have the same ALUXX SL frame but the XTC Alliance and Advance are composite/alu and carbon.

I've recently got a XTC1 through the Cycle 2 Work scheme and only picked it due to limited choices of hardtails through the delaer but it's a great bike, light and some nice specs too.

Yes,hence a great frame for upgrading.Pretty light frame at 1600g too,so posssible to build it into a light bike as funds allow/parts wear out.
    Mine started out as a 29lb bike,and is now a 24lb bike.

So whats the latest plan,Damo?

Well I sat on a Rockhopper (no Stumpys in stock) and didnt like it. Too upright and 'recreational' feeling. The guy said this is way geometrys gone over last 10 years. Last bike I rode was a 90's (93?) Stumpy so felt very diff to me.
I understand the XTC frame is a little more stretched (longer tt) and seems give the above a good choice for upgrate.
    So maybe an XTC?

Latest Rockhoppers come with short 70mm stems, and most bikes have riser bars so I guess it would feel strange compared to a 90s bike.Might be worth asking the shop to try you with a longer stem?

The XTC does have quite racy geometry. You would probably also find a Scott Scale more to your liking.

Stumpy hardtails are very stretched.I`m 6ft and fit 19" frames on most bikes, but recently tried a 19" Stumpy ht and my arms were locked out rigid, due to the combination of a long top tube, longer stem and flat bars.

If you like the XTC,there are some great deals,to be had.Take a look at:http://www.paulscycles.co.uk/products.php?plid=m1b4s2p1685

i really liked the feel of my old XTC, and i felt the same as you when I sat on a rockhopper while looking for a new one. i'd had my giant for 5 years and it's been a great bike, never let me down once.

He's right. I had about 15 years between bike purchases and the riding position could not be more different. My mid 90s Ridgeback was like a hardcore road machine in comparison to the laid back sofa that is my FSRxc. Wasn't long before I was loving it however.
You only need two tools: WD40 and Duck Tape.
If it doesn't move and should, use the WD40.
If it shouldn't move and does, use the tape.

Depends on the year XTC - some ranges had a cheaper frameset for the base models.

Yes, I think that the 4.5 prior to 2008 was a cheaper frame. I bought a 2008 4.5 (in autumn 2007) and was told that the frame was a good upgrade for that year as they had started using the same frame for the 4.5 as the rest of the range.

About time there was another XTC owner on this forum.Funny thing is a couple of years back when I first had mine, there were probably as many XTC owners as Rockhopper and Boardman owners.

Lol, I think they were a bit racy for many. The Talon range should sort that out - lovely frames, just apity about the spec on the 2.

My XTC is a 2006 SX which I think is a bit more laid back than the post 06 ones.Rear stays are slimmer too,so its a bit more forgiving than the newer ones.

Nice geometry on it too.Fast but still fun through the singletrack.

I must get around to trying a Talon,as you say spec is crap, but intrigued by the frame.
They need to do a higher spec one with a Maxle light 120mm Reba and SLX groupset.
