Ok i have been into bikes for years but haven't really bothered with much up until recent.
My question is as the title says "where does slx fit in"
I remember the way it was as:
STX
STXRC
LX
XT
XTR
With the few minor leagues behind like the tourney, altus and alivio.
Anyone know the purpose of SLX as in style (xc/fr/dh) or is it just an all rounder?
Neil.
If you cant race it, and you can't take it to bed, what is the point?

well forget about STX and STX RC as they were old mid 90's kit.

had a look on shimanos site? it lists it in order.

LX has moved to treking and SLX has replaced LX and Hone.

Ahhhh nice one for that Nick, for some reason my ie 8 crashed when loading there page but firefox runs it fine. I'm guessing has LX been done away with altogether or has been name changed to straight Deore.
I liked LX more than the other groupsets down to the prices being nice and the black parts. Deore just doesn't have the same sound as Deore LX and the SLX stuff doesn't really stand out enough for me.
Just my opinions mind, they probably out perform and outlast any of my old LX gear. Time will tell if i decide to go the shimano way again, for now i have avoided them and gone with SRAM for everything i could.

    Thanks again, Neil.

SLX is very nearly as good as XT and is probably the best in the Shimano range for performance v cost.

Also, since some XT is now pretty old- cranks ferinstance- the gap is I think a little narrower than it should be on some parts. I think when the XT range gets revamped you'll see it pull ahead again.

Funny thing is, you'll see XTR XT, SLX and Saint all being used and abused on everything from trail bikes to full on DH rigs.
Shimano has definitely cracked the super-tough market!

Problem you have with STX is the lack of options compared to XT. For example crank lengths or types of derailleur (shadow, low normal, top normal) . I think XT has always traded on the fact it has usually been the best funtioning one with the most options without getting into stupid money. Though with the price increases earlier in the year it is starting to look expensive.
