Got an XTR chainset with BB and noticed it was creaking a lot when riding on my old frame. I assumed was BB or neaded tightening up but was changing bikes neway so got it swaped to new frame shop said BB was fine but is still creaking a lot on down strokes of left and right pedals. No play that i can detect and seams to be free spinning really well when chain off.
Any ideas...? Could it be anything other than BB ie metal fatigue...??

Did you check the chainrings bolts?
It took me a week to find out that the clicking noise I had on my XT cranset was comming from a slightly loose chainring. Now everything is back to normal.

read the info on Parktools?
work through all the bike.
and the BB was faced?"Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

Hollow frames, components etc all amplify and/or make noises sound like they are coming from different places. Have you checked all other possible creaks?
Does it happen whilst seated? If yes, potentially seatpost/seatclamp. If not, headset, suspension pivots, anything that is likely to twist whilst mashing the pedals. Crouch next to the bike, hold the frame, grab the top of the rear wheel and try to flex the rear wheel side to side... is it creaking? If so, almost guaranteed to be a pivot.0 -
Will check bolts soon as get back home in a bit, but is definiately chainset/BB as had it on both old frame and new 1.Couple of 5 spots, a hummer and a handjob.....0
